That's the problem with the typed word. It can be taken the wrong way and sometimes when taken the correct way it allows wriggle room.

Either way hopefully Robert has wound it up for all and sundry.

As Derek says, very few fanciers will not suffer YBS since it is a broad spectrum name for many symptoms and very few lofts will go through a season without at least one YB being "under the weather" and thus the loft is suffering from YBS, although perhaps not the virulent strain we all despise.

Anyone's birds contracting YBS has my sincere condolences as I would wish it on nobody. Martin has the right idea and have all YB races from 100 miles as it gives those with the problem time to recuperate and get them back to strengthening their homing ability after all they are only babies. Down South many Federations only race week in and out from 100-110 miles Old and Young Birds so you dont have the problem of playing catch up and it gives birds the opportunity of rest with fewer losses to club and Fed incomes. Second rounders are able to make a couple of races half way through the programne with it being beneficial to all. Why we have to increase the distance every week is not the way forward in my opinion.

Totally agree Peter,this season with a bit of luck we have a young bird program that should be ideal to help those affected by YBS. Also those not affected.

Be interesting to know how the australians get on with young bird sickness, as they race their young birds 500 miles plus, and generally they beat the old birds they are competing with?

Just like to ask if young birds who have had ybs do they carry it in them as yearlings in some form or other or is completely out of their system,if not would breeding from them as yearlings be the reason some fanciers get it every year,only trying to learn from people more knowledgeable than myself Thanks.

 

Its not uncommon that youngsters can go down with this twice. The 2nd bout comes in a much milder form and is much harder to recognise. One of the symptoms is s spongy crop especially in young hens laying out for the first time. Old birds can also go down with y/b/s showing these same milder symptoms.

I believe that every pigeon that has contracted y/b/s carries it with them for life and is capable of passing it onto their youngsters.

it will not be prevented as long as your breeding from birds whose young get the virus or the parents had the virus in their early days and have become carriers.

what causes their digestive system to shut down? and how to prevent that?

from 2012 i saw this and thought i would let it run its course, bad mistake i lost half my YB team before i got meds from vet.

 

since then any yb that does not come when called..goes to basket for a 24hr starve and monitored, I have watched young do the stupidest of things like not knowing where the trap is and try fly to me to get into loft....these i also put in basket for a starve .....its as if the feckers dont know or forget...this could be the first signs

 

and also why a large proportion get lost racing and training ...

 

any how i have used amoxicillan this year when i noticed these things, it was a panic stricken reaction and it done them no harm ...young raced well for the 3 races i got them into.

 

I also thinks it affects the old birds too on a milder form ...but still affects them

stevie obviously these fanciers you are talking about birds are not contracting any secondary infection or it's not ybs there birds are getting cos believe me the birds don't even fly at home never mind coming out of a race basket,my own birds are shut down for a complete week and i personally think they need approx 3 weeks to recover fully enough to even start training them again hence why i quoted earlier that race programmes are not suited to let anyone back into racing their young birds

i don't think you'll get "on it"anymore quickly than me stevie having experienced it more times than i care to remember i know what the telltale signs are but what i find now is the birds don't take it to the extent they did in the early years when i can remember birds sitting in corners all hunched up with only their beaks against the wall stopping them from falling over

Lucky for me have never had it anything like that bad mate. I usually notice it first with the odd one that won't fly with the rest and the perches in the morning with the corn on. Obviously there must be more virile strains
