  2. Almond Valley 07.30 Stobbs Camp S/W wind
  3. Flown down, but now recuperated SU22SB1126
  4. Gin trap located where it is getting in will catch it to-night as it will return for certain.
  5. With the flock in fine fettle and exercising well, I thought, as I was starting to feel my age that my demise cannot be to far in the future I would re-commence Y/B racing. So with that thought in mind I paired all the yearling Hens to all the Cocks leaving me with 10 spare older Hens to rear a team of youngsters to keep me going into September, Oh aye I paired up on Valentines Day. Really happy with the feed change as they are much lighter without the Beans, although substituting them with Protein Powder appears to have done the trick. By the way the older Hens will be for the Longer Races and will be introduced around the 250 mile mark and rearing their first young going into their allocated Distance race. One can only endeavour to succeed by changing.
  6. Flax Oil from Holland & Barret and only during the big moult Sep / December 10mls per Kilo of feed. Lovely smooth shiny feathers.
  7. Wha wrote anything about Breeding ?.
  8. Aye Andy, I turned my brain into memory mode and went back 50/60 years. I done quite a bit of Fell Running and could do a 100yds sprint in less than 10 seconds with mates wanting me to enter the Powderhall New Year sprint, However I broke my ankle and that brought my running career to an abrupt halt. It was when thinking back to those days when I was full of vigour and running everywhere that I recalled the Daily meals that sustained my energy levels. My mate in those days was the Scottish Cross Country Champion 2 Years on the trot and all he ate was a plate of Potatoes, That was when the memory box reminded me that Tatties was the staple diet in our family and Meat was just once a week on Sunday. Now Beans, Peas, Tares supply our Pigeons protein needs SO I cut them all out, Replacing their feed with Barley, American Corn, and Chicken Layer Pellets and once a week laced with Flax Seed Oil and a sprinkling of Whey Protein Powder. Job Done.
  9. Oh well"" Xmas passed and New Year at the end of the week !, I can only wish all a Belated Merry Xmas and a HAPPY NEW YEAR when it comes. Downstairs in the loft all is well with the split 56 inmates and when out exercising putting in a good 2Hr + shift high up. I have managed to decrease body muscle weight without loss of muscle so they are all handling big and light with the change in feeding although it has taken quite a few months of experimentation, If tearing around the sky when exercising much faster than before, the only reaction I can foretell, then I could be a "Happy Camper" in the future.
  10. Perhaps the "Bird Flu" would be eradicated if Turkey and Chicken breeders were to stop feeding their livestock on Pellets infused with Anti Bacterial material for a number of months then feeding normal Pellets for a month or two prior to slaughter as we are all aware they have no immune system. This information was given to me by a worker in the Turkey Industry who would not eat any of the above if you paid him to.
  11. Went up last night and could not find a road in with all the road work and diversions, Gave up after 20 minutes driving aimlessly around ending up back at the stadium, So went home.
  12. Removing all the nest bowls in the loft has encouraged an old Cock to help me out when daily cleaning as he picks up all the flight and tail feathers and dumps them in his nest box which only requires my good self to clear his Box by hand and hoover all the Down feathers from the floor and boxes, saving time as the scraper is not getting clogged up when scraping the jobbies from perch and floor. Colony still exercising well when weather suitable with the odd Sparra Bassa putting in the odd appearance but high up, Perri also appeared last week and had three local teams and all the Streeters circling above it, I reckon their were easily 2-300 Pigeons outdoing it as it left with empty claws. Mind how you go !, as Covy is still with us.
  13. October, and the moult has started in a big way with feathers flying out of them and the hoover being emptied every third day, Makes me wonder if a nasty Winter is on the way. Reading lately in the weeklies on winter racing would certainly be one idea I would be keen to try and before anyone replies that December, January, February is too cold. I can only say that during those months my colony fly up to 2 Hrs daily willingly, I would also be for any age racing during those months. Perhaps the birds would have an easier time with the UK Peregrines buggering off to warmer climes.
  14. September already !, How time flies when you are having fun "NOT", My second round of Late breeds are about ready to leave the nest and join the First Round which are putting in a good shift and a delight to watch, The breeding and rearing programme experiment seems to have been quite successful although it is early days. I have to admit although working with early Computers in the eighties and with the late George Kelly in the Nineties regarding possible Race Programmes I am still trying to get my head round this Site which to an old fart like myself is equivalent to Einstein's "Theory of Relativity", However, We can only endeavour to succeed.
  15. Cheers Andy, I should have wrote Muscle instead of "Framed" as it is known that the skeleton of a pigeon is 20 times lighter than the body weight, If we look at athletes, we find sprinters are tall and with plenty muscle,, milers are medium build, and marathon runners do not have a pick on them. So where does the stamina and energy come from, I suppose it is a secret top fanciers will not dispense with so will have to return to Eddy Newcombe's feeding method excluding Beans and "Wee Mary" will just have to open her purse a wee bit more.
  16. Well, Birds returning from racing now number 18 and only 6 have returned without injuries so what to do, or, should it be, what can we do !!. I had posted a reply and accidentally sent it to another site so no doubt Basic members will have read it. Over the last couple of months I have been rearing my team of youngsters and experimenting to see if it is possible to rear a lighter framed bird as better fanciers than I have remarked that they look excellent but a bit heavy, which to be honest, I thought they were superb. Before some reply "Show Doos" !!, their lines are from Long Distance winning lofts. I do not know if the result will be successful as only racing proves the proof of the pudding.
  17. 50 years ago gamekeepers and land owners kept raptors at bay by shooting them destroying nests and poisoning them, and a blinking good job they did of it. The RSPB then became the so called savour of Song Birds by having Parliament create it an offence to disturb nests and with the RSPB being a charity and clever advertising now spend more cash protecting raptors at the expense of Song Birds. We as Pigeon Fanciers have the ball in our court, ONLY if we accept 100 year old practices require changing.. We have it in our power to kill off the raptors rearing more young simply by denying them the food required to rear them, You might say "HOW". Well,, All we have to do is start changing our race programme from Summer to Winter, We could have any age racing from November till March and leave the poor raptors with nothing to feed their babies nor learn them how to hunt when there is no prey being supplied for them. Too cold in those months say's you ! Well,, My colony go out every day in those months and will disappear ranging for between 1-2 Hours regardless of weather unless it is snowing, Shorter daylight hours only requires racing a program taking daylight into the equation.
  18. 4th June saw me enter 5 to Melton Mowbury with 1 returning and 6 to Huntingdon with 3 returning so decided that was enough 2021 racing from this loft. 2021 Season saw me start with a race team of 47 and finish with 15. I don't believe I have ever lost so many Birds that were trained well, Handled well and were super fit. If their is an answer to the losses apart from Peri strikes where they usually turn up the next day however not in my case, Jeez it does my head in trying to figure it out. The remaining inmates are now rearing a young bird team of 2 rounds which will bring the loft back up to Winter numbers of around 50 which is a manageable figure for an auld age penshunner. Hope all goes well with the remaining programme to one and all..
  19. Aye Derek, San Sebastion is only 880 miles to me !! Fainting at the thought. 891 miles frae Pau..
