What problems can wild rabbits cause to the detriment of pigeons in your back garden

Budgie, rabbits are carrying another disease at the moment, its not mixy, cant mind the name of it, I was told by a gamekeeper at last summer time, so don't take any chances mate, get shot owe them, or even better get a pic owe TAM in the garden. :emoticon-0136-giggle: :emoticon-0136-giggle:

If they have access to beneath the loft their presence can stop your birds resting properly at night. Not a serious problem but enough to stop them winning.

Yes chines disease can't mind the technical name for it 90 % of the rabbits that get it die in there buried that's y you don't find them lying about it has desamated the bunny population and only rabbits can get it so don't worry,

A mate of mine has a lot of rabbits around his lofts but he keeps the grass long now as he reckons the rabbit droppings were knocking the birds off. Most of the rabbits have myxo.

Rabbit haemorrhagic disease and its variants (Lagoviruses)

First recorded in China in 1984 - so not that new

Andy your biggest problem is that their droppings look a little like peas, so the pigeons might eat them, apart from, as Robert said, the disturbance they cause at night whilst under the loft.

I do not know what they carry that is transferable to pigeons, but the normal suspects would be tapeworm, roundworm, coccidiosis, etc.

For me, prevention is better than cure, so get that dug out there at night. :D :D :D

Its called Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD-2) Dougie, Some experts warn it could be more devastating than myxomatosis which killed 99% of the UK's rabbit population in the 1950s.

Pat, am friendly with some game keepers and some poachers mate, that's what they was saying about the rabbit.

Eye, but was mixy not a man made things relating to the farmers putting some kind of pesticide to stop them eating crops etc.

I done a bit of ferreting/poaching, and when you came across them with mixy, you can actually just pick them up.

Not so many bunnies running around now.

yes it was a try to rid us of rabbits, they used to be a good meal, it was a legal thing, used to see them crawling around with their eyes hanging out,was a cruel thing,

Years ago you would see rabbits hung in the local butcher's, don't see that now eh, wonder why.

Still a lot of people looks for them, but they aren't there anymore.

We had a lot of Rabbits here but sadly all wiped out with it, Only a few died above ground and we tried penicillin on a couple to no avail, They used to be on the yard as well where my open loft mob have been for many years, never caused any problems for the birds apart from stealing their food as I often fed them out on the yard with the Rabbits joining them. The pic. is an old one taken through the window so not great, We have three dogs but they never bothered the bunnies.

We had about 40 rabbits in hutches in the yard when I was a small child - and I thought they were all pets - I've never knowingly eaten rabbit since

Most of the rabbits are eaten by foxes now, the wheelie bin stopped there food source over night, used to blame stray dogs for bursting the paper bin bags, before snaring 4 in the garden many years ago.

As I said, worms and coccidiosis. I knew someone would eventually agree with me.

On a side note, lad I knew used to snare them and use ferrets. He never cleared an area, just to ensure he was recalled the following year. His freezer was full of them. :)

The food chain has moved on Dougie, although I have never tried rabbit myself.
