Just after my last post the box packed in at its usual unexpected time and declared it was not going to work for me again so with it declaring self redundancy I dumped it in the bucket and my Laddie treated me to a new one curtesy of a golden wedding present and a black Opal pendant for his mum Wee Mary. Aye 50 years in already which have been filled with up's and downs with laughter and tears but most of all memories.

In the loft the Cocks will be shifted into the perch section and I will move onto Roundabout for a couple of races to give the Late Breds and Yearlings a bit of Racing experience before puting them bye for next season.

Watched a batch of trainers heading West about 12.30 to-day and they were obviously unfit with the wing beats more of a slap to keep airborne, so hope they had not much further to go or somebody was going to be missing a few to-night.

At our Saturday session it made sense to the table the change of race routes every couple of years as written in the BHW to help eradicate the Bassas through starvation ! Well it made sense to us, Will it happen ? NAW..

What a beautiful day to start Roundabout which was just a pity nobody told the birds, Cocks out and put in 7 minutes before hitting the loft and demanding to be let back in so they were not happy campers at having to stay out till the 60 minutes were up while I had to jack the Hens off their nests and put through the perch section. Cocks back in and fed then Hens given their freedom when along came a Buzzard high up on the thermals and had the Hens joining it so at least they had their wings stretched up there. My twa neighbour's had their's out as well so three sets were circling the Buzzard separately, poor beggar did not know where to look for a meal..looking in on the Cocks they had all resumed sitting their eggs so wont remove them till they decide enough is enough whereupon I will close off the rear portion of their nest box and they will then be back onto the wood block at the front. More trainers going through to-day heading West so wish them well..

Regarding changing route's Steve, We reckoned every couple of years not yearly, to bring the numbers down naturally because reading between the lines very few are helping the cause !!.

Solway went east then West then east and west again. The losses were bad at first on either route but we are now settled on the west and have had 2/3 years of great, maybe exceptional, racing......racing that almost resembles what the old guys used to talk of. Let's hope it continues.

In the loft last night for the last feed of the day and noticed a 3 year old stranger just returned from Riems last year, checked out O/K so will be returned this year to ascertain if he can perhaps do it a wee bit quicker.

10 minutes for both sexes had me complaining about the lack of effort in the exercise period to "Him doon the street" and he retorted that he was having the same problem as well as "Him roond the bend", Baffling is not what it should be and we cannot come up with an answer. Three differing lofts in management etc, etc, Bizarre..

I'd hazard a guess it's because you've left the eggs in Peter?

A good wee tip I was given when it comes to separating 'roundabout' pigeons, was take the eggs away around 5 the night before you separate. Then split them at lunchtime the next day.

I've found it to work better than other ways I tried. The hens don't freak out trying to get back through to their eggs as they know they aren't there and the cocks don't feel any extra responsibility sitting a nest by themselves, good exercise periods are fairly immediate and it saves wasting three or four days.

just a possible theory.

I do believe you are on the right lines Lewis as normally I would have them rearing 12 days then separate with both parents feeding when they came back into the N/B section. The differance this year was to only have them sitting about 8 days before shifting the Hens letting them back into th N/B section to sit again. With the Cocks doing the overnight shift with eggs. They have now to-day abandoned them so it was a total clear out in the Section and N/B fronts back on leaving the bird to sit on the wood block at the front.

The Hens when let out this morning took off like rockets and I had a glimpse of them half a mile out, I was congratulating myself with a cuppa when they returned after 15 minutes onto the loft roof,, Beggars,,Still they are on the right lines with 16 days to go till the off.

I would be delighted if my birds did 15mins......makes no odds to your results

Dinah Washington sang "What A Diff'rence A Day Makes" and I was singing it this morning after letting the Hens out and them off their mark for 45 minutes ranging 1/2-3/4 mile out in a large circle with the odd crossing over the loft. What differed from previous days was that I returned to one feed per day after calling them in and alternating the feed to AM feed one day then PM feed the next which is what I was doing from the start of this trial feed mixture. Cocks were a little bit shy in taking off for the outer reaches but still put in 30 minutes then 30 in short flights.

One thing I can guarantee with time exercising, is the state of fitness they are in, as without it, you wont be at the races where I am with 8 lofts within a 150 yard radius all trying to outdo each other. One can only hope it lasts as they will never be in a training basket this year. Us pensioners cannae afford the price of petrol training them. :emoticon-0136-giggle: :emoticon-0136-giggle: :emoticon-0136-giggle: :emoticon-0136-giggle:

Last night when Jack and Jill [Dogs] went out for their last business for the day they accidentally knocked over my smoker resulting in an almighty crash with metal hitting concrete. Never gave it much of a thought as I re-erected it before retiring for the night.. The consequences were high lighted to-day as on letting the Hens out this morning they were out and gone in a flash returning on the hour then disapearing again for another hour before hitting the house roof. Whistling them down they were as jittery as I have never seen them before and whenever any hit the Petron board they were off again. This continued all afternoon with just the odd one entering every hour or so with the last one in at 19.15.

They are not happy campers and standing on the blocks ready for causing mayhem so I have closed up without entering the loft and hope they will have calmed down by to-morrow.

I was rather apprehensive on opening the Loft door this morning, expecting to find loose droppings from the Hens, however all was well with small piles of firm manure at the side of the blocks. Cocks put out and turned in 30 minutes then another period of clapping away enjoying the freedom of the skies till they were brought in and all fed with hearty appetites.

A blue and cloudless sky to-day and you would imagine perfect training weather BUT I have been caught out with that scenario before, So I stopped training in those days and would only contemplate training if their was a bit of cloud cover. With the intention of jumping them staight into either the First or Second race and the forecast !!! proclaiming detrimental weather this coming week I will have them basketed in the loft for a couple of hours daily.

Wee Mary returning from the Butcher's Shop to-day asked if I was having a bet on the National to which I replied "A Mugs Game" however she went on to say that she had recieved a tip from an old guy in the shop as to which nag to get your dough on as it was a certainty. Now I gave her a funny look as she has never at any time in the past encouraged me to do such a neferous thing as gamble our pension money on a pigeon far less some beast that would end up in a dog meat tin. Seeing her bottom lip trembling I relented and gave her my Daily Express news paper to cut out the £1 free bet token and nip round to the Turf Accountant and place her Tip on 50p Each Way and she gaily skipped away to do the deed. Watching the Race later on the telly and with Wee Mary clutching her betting slip to her bosum and giving me sly knowing looks she suddenly jumped up and unladylike started shouting at the telly frightening not only me and the dogs but passers bye outside, screaming her head off as "One for Arthur" crossed the winning line. Told you so she retorted on her way out the door to collect her £8.35p Winnings and leaving me with egg on my face at what could have been..I will be drowning my sorrows just shortly..

Great minds think alike I stuck a £10 on the lovely wee horse £150 in pocket then I heard the wife say where my share, betting winners is a mugs game

Was, and is done in Canada and many other places. Seems that it has good effects and returns.

You know, We see posts / articles in the R.P. and BHW saying how one site is very badly affected regards the Percy etc. Yep that they line up on a Saturday and wait for the liberations each week FOR THEIR breakfast ... and even take their youngsters along for practise in killing the birds..

Some of us put if for a different lib site at the club / Feds etc.

First crap scenario is 'May as well stay there ... the Percy's are every where'!

Yep on way home etc. etc. they may bump into a few... But them lot aren't waiting at the Lib site each week!

Also I don't know regards the West coast of Scotland, but surely a constant change has to be of some good surely.

Out side of those frightened of given a club mate a little help and lee way. Yep that IS the main reason - I believe - why some out vote it each year! JMO.

Yep bet Fionavon a few bob before the day. Offered at 2000 to one even. Thought 'It keeps going out ... I'll let it roll' lol. Put a £1 on for my mate too.

Any way the missis wanted a bet and looking at the bets wanted a £1 roll up on first four. Barmy or what! I said s much but promised to put it on ... But never bothered etc.

They came in in that order!

1st | West Tip | Richard Dunwoody 15/2

2nd | Young Driver | Chris Grant | 66/1

3rd | Classified | 23/1

4th | Mr Snugfit | 13/2 F

I had to look it up again lol.

I went home full of smiles and sh*t faced beaming for her good and great fortune as I handed over £12 56p....

Mind I was dancing on my feet for weeks as she was very sceptcal regards it only paying such a small amount.

Could not have accomplished that many views without you fancier readers and can only hope I dont repeat myself too often.

If the truth be known I only started Natural as I was fed up with Roundabout and the ability to find the bird on form as I get more pleasure in picking out my first bird to the loft in a race rather than just winning which can be just as difficult when surrounded by really good fanciers in such a small radius.

As those with a good memory will remember my reasons 12 months ago however this new team has been most dissapointing and attempting to reastablish a team capable in a truly Natural state will take a bit of weeding out to find those with a good Homing Instinct to return at speed which fitness will provide. Breeding youngsters from Stock Pigeons which have never seen the inside of a basket is a waste of time and effort with unacceptable losses regardless of their breeding is my opimion only, so please dont reply and say s**te. Look to your own and honestly admit how many winners you have bred from a Stock pair ?. You will no doubt find you have lost the bulk of them. ME I dont have a single Stock pigeon left and will breed in future from a tried and proven race team,, If nothing else then I will know the parents have something in their genes to pass on namely Homing Instinct..
