Countless times have I sat in the shed on friday thinking'No a bad wee squad for the water' only to be sitting on a saturday night wondering where it all went wrong?? It happens to everybody and the best you can do is make sure your birds are fit and healthy because motivation, medication, breed etc are all toooo much of a variable, what works for somebody doesnt mean it will work for somebody else!!

I had 10 candidates for the water this year and have 7 left. Some will go back to newbury before the water races but others will stay at home. I will be very fortunate if I still have 7 in two weeks time?

I think the problem is that Leicester lies in th middle of the country in fact just about dead centre ,and if its an easterly wind then they come up the west of the Pennines , but should be ok for the Lanarkshire if this happens this year

I know that electronic communications have been discussed on this site before especially with regard to racing losses but it seems this site at Menwith Hill just north of Harrowgate has been expanded. I note the web site suggests it is a tool used in drone attacks which makes me think it will be particularly active at the moment.

Yes Menwith hill could well be the problem, it is 5 miles west of Harrogate and the pigeons flying into the west of Scotland were only 3-4 miles west of the base, this of course if they had taken a straight line, which is more than possible given that there was very little wind.

Remember Menwith hill, possibly being the cause of the Wetherby young bird disaster in 2009, at that time it was pointed out that local organisations whose members race and train in that area never encountered any problems. But as we know pigeons can pretty much adapt to anything, the problem we have into the west of Scotland, is that are pigeons are only exposed to Menwith Hill from Wetherby and Newark, in turn our pigeons dont have the opertunity to deal and adapt with, whatever signals it throws at our pigeons, not forgetting the fact that there still 150 miles from home.
