i know of only the one that had balls to do it and it was wilson, he has failing health now and hasnt flown a good doo for a while but ill always remember his words to me , davie if the sun is on the crate then go, wise words fae auld wilson noble, i wish him well/

Some other names that sent with the 1,000ml

Club along with Henry Mair were Alan Raeside from Ayrshire, quite a few around Ayrshire used to send also Dave Smith from Dunning John Ellis, Bert Stewart Carnoustie then the Crieff loft of Hunter Gauld & Saunders. There was a well known loft in Gorebridge who did well, names on the tip of my tongue. I will get some of the other names in time when i remember.

 

There were other guys from Fife, Dundee and Angus and of course even guys from the North sect Abbie Bruce was one that springs to mind also wilson Noble Fraserburgh who also sent and im sure recorded a pigeon from Rome some 12 hundred odd mls i think. Stand corrected on the latter part of this post tho.

I did fly in same club as a guy that Henry mair used in his advert mr &mrs Gibson and they did very well with them at club and fed and scored well in nationals but that was 30 plus years ago .

Colin spot on Mr &. Mrs Gibson from Dalkeith with there Sartilly Express which contained some of Henry Mair's lines but as you said that was long time ago

got 4 youngsters from henry early 90s i was building a team of youngsters and had payed a few ££ for them anyway as i said i never got to even get in to his garden, so i had 32 youngsters ready to start training when i got a chap at the door it was coshy and walter mc, we will give them a toss as we are tossing today ,, i told then no further than douglas 8 miles away , well 2 hours later coshy dropped off the basket ,o where did you put them up eeee just by johnston bridge ,expletive remove johnston bridge 50mil,, lol only got 2 back and the 2 i got were henry mairs lol

Bert Stewart, Carnoustie had the 1st bird into Scotland from 1000 mile race, around 1977. A & A Taylor, Dundee were 3rd if my memory is correct. Bert Stewart's pigeon was a mealy hen named "Betty's Delight", which was bred by A & A Taylor. The Taylor loft was based on John Ellis, Wellbank blood. I'm pretty sure "Betty's Delight" flew Pau, the season before she was 1st Palamos with the Scottish 1000 mile club.

Dave, surely if I had written a reply on the day it was wrote it would be correct, but, as I have replied to a post written the day before I must use the past tense and wrote would be correct.

Now I did not pass my 11+ nor go to Secondary school very often so if my grammer is wrong then I do apologise however I do know my right from write or am I wrong again. LOL

they had a saintes race for fanciers up here think it was 7/800 mile and not many went to it

Yup thats right m8 i went to verify the winning pigeon a beauty owned and raced by Peter Patrick of Thornton in Fife.

I think the last one in England was Bilco's Rome 1000 miler 1012 to here about.. He said he would do another. How ever other countries do. One has to take in account - I believe John - the climate and terrain they would be flying over, and of course the time of year suitable to us.

I was in Canada 2005, when the Pickle Lake race was set up. Indeed I was the instigator and staying with Mike van der Jagt then, amongst others. We, Mike and I, spent a lot of time debating and we searched the web high and low for other such races, and then of course looking over the maps for a suitable, and somewhat fair liberation point.

I favoured that we should head into the North West for a following wind to help etc. Though of course the wind could not be guaranteed.

We thought that a 600 miles would a good starting point... But maybe could go down to London etc and beyond.

 

But of course, though Canada has nothing if not 1000's of square miles – and only 1700 pigeon fancier, where one could get to was indeed a burden. For much of the time when off the beaten track so to speak the way forward was impossible to take a pigeon transporter etc.

A plane? Nowhere to land / if cost effective.

 

First flew in 2006. (Agreed after I came back home and I was only able to make the odd input over the net ). So in reality I was not long on board lol.

 

One realised quickly, that there were a few obstacles to get over. First off interest. Second transport etc.

Of course clocking stations aren't a problem as night birds sent the particulars were set to one sauce. It was to be a 6 day race – not an endurance test – and the pigeons timing confirmed by fancier and 2 others.

Soon 800 mile plus lofts were putting their' names up. Then others... But one may have great hopes and zest, but it still needs those interested to put in a firm yes and them act and participate.

It was a great success first off, but for whatever reason it lost, interest . Mainly when those left with the running got no help. When those running maybe lost interest for any reason.
