How is all your breeding going!

I am not getting a good return this year , last year I had 100% hatch from my first round but this year I noticed early on that a lot of the eggs were dirty where normally the eggs are mostly clean and smooth but not this year and now I think there are a few that are not going to hatch along with 6 empty eggs,

Done every thing as last year , parastop /wormed/canker /etc.

I,m a bit deflated by them plus the weather of coarse is crap and can't get racers out much .

Rant over .

I have had around 75% which is nae great. I have a two yr old hen that I bought in the winter refuses to lay, a proven stock hen that has started laying one at a time and another pair of 5yr old that have been together all the time breeding winners two blank rounds this year. I wuldna stress

had a few that havent hatched Colin (4 eggs) in 4 nests and 1 hen didnt lay . i expected worse due to the age of many of my stock .that was from 9 pairs . 2 hens aged 10 years ,1 at 9 and 1 6 yr old were responsible . not fussed :animatedpigeons:

I bought 6 birds later bred , all eggs full it's my older birds ( only around 4/7year olds that have been dodgy . Must admit I am not a lover of parastop so next year they will not e treated at all ( if my health holds out) .

Not saying parastop is to blame .

swapped 3 pair of stock doos eggs under the yearlings and also an egg from a 10 yr old hen that laid a good egg and a soft egg so the good egg was floated tae all hatched and the yearlings all hatched (1st lot paired) bar 1 pair that that had sat too tight? other lot paired 14 days later all sitting but 2 pair of broken eggs so now sitting dummies but not checked any of their eggs yet and 1 pair of 2 yr old late breds that huvnae settled at the new place at all and still huvnae laid :emoticon-0179-headbang:

Anything outside looking in on the sitting birds, causing them to lift ??

I've had a good hatch with most eggs full, still waiting on a pair of Latebred stock birds to lay. 18 year old stock cocks managed to fill all 4 of his eggs!!

No mate stock birds are in brick garage with no outside windows but have big Avery . Think it's the weather myself .

i think mother nature is at play with mild weather a few days a week telling the birds its time to breed then cold snaps a few days a week telling the older pigeons its to cold to breed think its just your luck if you get a wee run of mild weather where the hens have started the process of making eggs and cant stop when the cold snaps come back another week or two will make a big difference when temp is up and stays up

I purchased a small incubator this year as I was fed up with broken eggs with yearling cocks fighting in the wrong boxes & cold weather Its been heaven 16 eggs full and all chipping out within days of each other. I am now single rearing all 16 Which is going well

The incubator sits in my kitchen I set the temp add 100mls of water every other day it turns the eggs automaticly A good safe way with no heartbreaks(LOL)

Paired up everything at mid-day to-day with it being the full moon and hopefully all will go well as every other year.

Not that i was really paying attention to full moon etc(( but interesting to know))i put in newspapers in boxes and bowls, nest felts yesterday as well and the cocks were whirling around in the bowels and shouting for the hens straight away ,its more for me i left it later this year.

do you not find it a bit difficult to get 16 pair all ready for the hatching and be able to get the 16 squeakers under them at exactly the right time ?

Paired mine on last months full moon all laid 8/12 days. All but two hatched one had a dent in it the other was still chipping out two days after the first egg hatched and it had a large dry dropping attached to it.I broke open the shell and the back end of the squeaker had a large lump on it and was bleeding, maybe the dropping had penetrated the shell?

Hope the 2nd lot we paired eggs are ok as we built the extension onto the big loft the last couple of days...Not the ideal time to build it but needs must and it does look good now it is finished (just needs undercoated when it is dry enough ) even if i say so masel :emoticon-0157-sun: :emoticon-0157-sun: :emoticon-0157-sun:

Its not difficult I was only want Y/Bs off 8 pair I had paired up another 10 pair in case of mishaps and you have always got that couple of days layway to play with. Its worked out for me no problems
