  1. My north Club has 30 members and we still organise Club shows and a presentation evening. My south Club has around 16 members with no organised social activities.
  2. Peter, do you still feed your pigeons bread? The reason I ask is that I don't think many use these old methods, but now we have very few pigeons able to "work home". Could it be because they don't know how to survive? Very few use open hole or feed bread, etc. The old ways are going and so are the pigeons.
  3. I think geography must come into play here. In broad general terms I think it is better to have a larger vibrant Club where the workload can be shared, rather than a small Club just to make it easy to win. I am a Member of two Clubs and both are very difficult to gain a win. This means I have to constantly strive to up my game and if I ever reach the top, I'll have to constantly strive to stay there. This is what competition should be like.
  4. Read before about feeding cheese and the pigeons going made for it. Think it was in Belding's book.
  5. Good morning.
  6. Happy birthday.
  7. In simple terms, yes you still need to vaccinate and keep a watch for ailments.
  8. Some would say the other Old Hand books are too dated, but given that, there is still some good information to be garnered. The racing scene has changed quite a bit since then, so I very much doubt that following Old Hand's methods will make you winner.

  12. Good morning all.
  13. Ayrshire North Road have grill fitted to all the crates. Wooden frame mesh grills. They are not messy when removed to replace the papers. A lot of good points being raised here and even though we don't race distance, it is good to know that we have moved in the correct direction in regard to crate hygiene and watering. We have noted that the heat in the trailer can be a problem. This shall be further monitored during 2016, but our 2015 solution is for the conveyer to open the curtains on arrival at the race point for a period of one hour to allow a full change of air / heat dissipation before closing them for the evening. He opens them again for an hour in the morning and the pigeons are given water for a full hour before liberation is allowed.
  14. The Ayrshire North Road Federation recently refurbished its trailer. We fitted new racking and bought new wooden crates. I am not debating the wicker issue, but with the Geraldy crates and with our wooden ones and perhaps even with wicker ones our current system could work. What we have is through ventilation and water (or feed) on both long sides of the crate. We have no requirements for the feed, but have seen a marked improvement in the condition of the pigeons because of the improved watering facility. In regard to, if it is not broken don't fix it. I partly agree with the sentiments, but my understanding is that regulations have came into force which caused changes and also we should be continuously looking to improve the situation for our pigeons whether that be by air conditioning or feed water systems. Some of these things cost "the earth", but small things like reducing the number of pigeons whilst ensuring they are not being thrown about the crates, don't cost anything.
  15. Good morning all.

  22. I've never given it, but know of some that do. I've heard they really like it, so if nothing else it keeps them happy and contented. Plenty of mole hills in the next field from my loft.
