Goodview Posted July 29, 2017 Report Posted July 29, 2017 Having been in the doo game for over 40years. I took a break at the end of 2014. I kept a few old favourites and some stock doos ...just in case..... We moved house and the garden is starting to take shape , even a nice wee space for the doo hut was planned in . I keep an eye on the results/ returns etc and I am starting to question the wisdom in racing again. This year must be the worst ever for a nat race season.I read the forums on baskets/ geraldy etc . The weather at nationals this year has been horrendous. Percy again .Sparrowhawks hitting doos at the loft. When I became a fed member we had small wooden crates roughly 3'x2' stacked directly on top of each other on the transporter , the outside was a roller door type of arrangement to allow the liberation to take place. There was a perforated panel in the bottom of each about 18" square .When I was old enough and physically able to help load the transporter I did so and the heat in there was obscene,,grown men coming out of there with sweat running of them . My fed ,years later went to larger baskets and or crates depending on club decision. And a new larger better transporter!! Did the racing improve? Not one bit , although it certainly didn't get any worse. Are all the organisations using Geraldy transportation having great or even good racing? .............. Perigrines are now everywhere.. same with the sparrowhawks ...some fanciers giving up because they even go in to there lofts.Nobody has a cure/control/ answer to this problem which we all face . I said many years ago that the weather was as much a threat to doo racing as hawks , the localised weather is absolutely crazy , thunder storms in some areas and 20mls away the sun is shining. Can somebody convince me why I should start up again ?

I couldnt handle it so i wrapped it i wish i could start back up again but the losses have got worse and I genuinely am gutted for guys that put so much effort into there pigeons. Its a great sport ruined.

Its a great sport ruined.Too true frank in never off basics its on first thing every morning before the kettle gets boiled was thinking about starting next season again but to read the horror stories on here every morning be it training racing or around the loft I think I will stick with the Stephen king novels at least I can wake up in the morning and realise it's just a story and not a real horror story
cemetary Posted July 29, 2017 Report Posted July 29, 2017 Nothing will be done in the pigeon game until the higher above can get aff the chair to help the doo men. Its horrendous every time you are reading things about guys getting gutted, all the hard work down the drain. If I had the choice of coming into pigeons now, I WOULD THINK TWICE, I would really consider doing something else with my time, at least you would be able to enjoy it more, IMO. The doo game has been getting battered for many years, and its not getting any better as years go on. No matter what people think, the higher above has to step in here, or the doo game will be fooked in 5 years or less.

cemetary Posted July 29, 2017 Report Posted July 29, 2017 cem, what is the higher above going to do about the peregrine strikes A more tighter control on the for a start, not so many boxes being put up in Cathedrals etc.
Mattydoos79 Posted July 29, 2017 Report Posted July 29, 2017 Erm I'm new in this pigeon game please not scare newcomers in this hobby, we all try our best to get good numbers for racing as yes you do lose half after a season. IMO we breed pigeons to a good number and it balances out to the losses, only downside is expenses to chip rings, feeding and the loft upkeep also the doos but hey other hobbies cost money too (expensive golf clubs etc). We need to keep this hobby alive as pigeons have a good history and you never know there might be a time we need them for messages in war (if technology breaks down lol)
bhirst Posted July 29, 2017 Report Posted July 29, 2017 Well I know it's hard going with everything going on that people have mentioned above , but enjoyed basketing last night had a laugh and a good crack And today I didn't win but still enjoyed the anticipation of the birds arrival and seeing them come plus all home safe which is a rare thing so onwards Good luck with your decision

Valiant Fifer Posted July 29, 2017 Report Posted July 29, 2017 Got to the stage now that my advice for anyone starting the game would be for them to NEVER to get started!
will Posted July 29, 2017 Report Posted July 29, 2017 I know that there's been losses with the old birds, but do you think it would make any difference to the young bird losses if, for the first 2 or 3 races, there was a few crates of old birds as well?

dal2 Posted July 29, 2017 Report Posted July 29, 2017 Pigeon racing is fantastic. Put the work in if you want results but if you just want them home then thats great too. You will defo loose a few but as long as you keep it in perspective (no life or death)then it truly is magic.
sammy Posted July 29, 2017 Report Posted July 29, 2017 If you lose that flag I might agree with you Sammy haha how's things mate am fine joe how you doing and when the dookit going up
Goodview Posted July 29, 2017 Author Report Posted July 29, 2017 A lot of really good answers guys ...looks like I will breed a round next year and have a wee potter around , just to see the difference in the last 4 years . Think I will do things a bit different this time round with regards to the training and racing , who knows. It might actually work.
