BIGPETE Posted March 20, 2016 Report Posted March 20, 2016 In your opinion... when does a pigeon become a Champion? It seems some people are overly keen to use this term (yes, usually the guys who are keen to sell a load of their offspring in the books or at sales...)! But in your opinion, where is the line between a very good pigeon and a Champion?

Kyleakin Lofts Posted March 20, 2016 Report Posted March 20, 2016 A pigeon that regularly tops the Club could be referred to as a Club Champion, similarly with a Federation Champion etc. It used to be considered that distance racing was the main drive in the sport. How far are we able to have our pigeons race back from. In these cases the races were organised on a National Level and it would mean that in the "Blue Riband" race, the winning pigeon would be the Champion for that year.In other hobbies, budgie exhibiting, it is the fancier who is graded as a Champion. You have to qualify through the various grades to reach Champion level. For me, I would rather have pigeons from a Champion fancier than the rare Champion pigeon. These Champion fanciers are the ones who regularly do well in the distance races, either Nationally or in their respective area.
WHITTY Posted March 20, 2016 Report Posted March 20, 2016 in my opinion there are different champions that breed birds to win in all competitions at all levels then there are champion show birds birds that win in top shows all over this country just my opinion
moscow master Posted March 20, 2016 Report Posted March 20, 2016 All the wee doos in my loft are wee champs as the amount of hurdles they've to overcome staying alive these days is an achievement in itself ðŸ‘
geordie1234 Posted March 20, 2016 Report Posted March 20, 2016 A champion for me is a pigeon that is a multiple performance pigeon....whether it ge from 100 miles or 500 Not just one win
Novice Posted March 20, 2016 Report Posted March 20, 2016 When a pigeon hits the landing board and brings a tear to your eye - that's a champion.
duncow Posted March 20, 2016 Report Posted March 20, 2016 Team Blair's Bessie hen a real champion and if he was still in game she would score this year without a doubt
ALF Posted March 20, 2016 Report Posted March 20, 2016 When a pigeon hits the landing board and brings a tear to your eye - that's a champion. Hard to come by

She is also the dam to 1st Open SNFC Clermont winner, Mary's Boy.
eastcoaster Posted March 20, 2016 Report Posted March 20, 2016 I've been in partnership with the brother when we won nearly all races in club and topped fed many times and the feeling when we were 3rd open by only 3 yards from 5500 birds but it don't come close to the feeling of timing on the night from 500 mls 14/16 hours on the wing just to get home that is a champion win or lose .jmo
showman Posted March 20, 2016 Report Posted March 20, 2016 in my opinion there are different champions that breed birds to win in all competitions at all levels then there are champion show birds birds that win in top shows all over this country just my opinion Very pleased to see you include show pigeons! Not sure if it's still in force, but the British Show Racer Federation at one time had a system of points in place which would result in individual birds being regarded as Champions under BSRF rules. I can assure you any bird awarded Champion status earned it. In our last 2 years of showing we had a Silver Cheq hen who was in the team for these 2 years. 6 shows as YB, 6 as a Yearling. 10 times 1st, and 3 times Best in Show. She was nominated twice to represent NISRF at Blackpool. Didn't send her ! Joe and I never looked on her as anything more than consistent, never a 'Champion'.
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted March 20, 2016 Report Posted March 20, 2016 Hard thing to define. Every loft has it's own champ, which is part of the fun. A lot of great doos at various distances, the occasional bird at them all. As far as Scottish pigeon racing goes I don't think there has been a performance, before or since, to better that of the great 5 O'clock Rock-bred and raced by pb's Walter Masson. 1st Open SNFC Avranches(622miles) on a velocity of 1107, 125ypm ahead of the runner up-flying 120miles further.
