Graveyard.

 

I'll have to check that nobody in the graveyard was associated with the slave trade in the 1700's. We might have to remove their gravestones.

 

History is history. These merchants, plantation owners and even slave traders were operating under the conditions of their time. Some of them made vast amounts of money, others just earned a wage to put food on their table.

 

My wife worked in the Glasgow cigarette factory. I expect WD & HO Wills, Players, etc made a lot of money from the slaves.

 

Whilst slavery is wrong, it is still happening today. I think we should educate our way out of the past and ensure we take care of our own social problems within our own time period. Removing statues will not remove the deeds, good and bad. Our society was founded in our history and our future history will be the way we handle the wrongs within our society now.
