  1. Full moon March or April depending on weather.
  2. Surely what you are doing is totally against nature Wattie.
  3. Come Come Derek what is 16 miles between friends when you would love to see me flying against others 50 miles East of me. LOL
  4. Well that's another season well and truly over including the Fed AGM. To recap on the original post "DEVASTATION" would be putting it mildly, The Fed could or should I say would not complete the OB programme due to a lack of birds with Worcester being replaced by Appleby to save money although we finished up with £10,500 in the bank and Airdrie club transferring into Lanarkshire taking with them members from other clubs. YB racing was much the same as usual with massive losses especially when we would not liberate with Lanarkshire although we were at the same race site, "safety in numbers" was not an option. The AGM was to my mind rather tedious as I had proposals in to share transportation which Mr Garven obviously did not want to know about as I had to remind him as he wanted to move on that I wanted to know if he had been contacted regarding same forcing him to inform the members of a telephone conversation he received from a female who he could or would not identify and who disconnected the call. I and others noted that he could not force himself to mention Lanarkshire by name at any time nor was he inclined to discuss the matter further. The race programme was decided at a management committee meeting prior to the AGM which was something no one in our club had any input but the £3,000 loss in income will be offset by increasing birdage by 2p. To say some of us are envious of Airdrie club would be the understatement of the year. Derek if you are within the Midland boundary apply to Denny we need all the support we can get.
  5. MMMM Yes Derek their is plenty of talk on here and unfortunately it is mostly negative.. I like Walter have read the article in the R.P. and found it most instructive regarding changes to our racing. The article which I have to say has been thought out in great detail does not shorten our racing season rather the opposite and makes complete sense with old birds of 2 and above competing in old bird racing and followed by yearling only racing in August and September. Their are many pluses for this and YB sickness is one if not the more advantages as it appears to be on the increase decimating teams of perfectly healthy birds by those who have contracted the disease and are still capable of passing it on through negligent fanciers entering what they believe are those YB which are getting over it or in the throes of contracting it. The article also mentions the savings of not having to breed unnaturally in winter and most importantly as has been mentioned in another post summer bred youngsters are bred in the purple.
  6. Lost a 3 year old a couple of weeks ago when it flew into a lamp post that was erected about 50 years past.
  7. No, I keep all the young birds and old hens together till I am ready to repair and come off roundabout for a round of latebreds in July. What you will observe is the youngsters when confident on the wing will separate from the old hens when exercising and take off themselves.
  8. I too have only 2 sections and flew a form of celibate this year on roundabout. I paired up end of February and all the hens were removed at 12 day young and put into their own section with V perches. The youngsters were removed when 20-25 days and all put into the hen section. Roundabout was then started with the hens out first and the cocks chased through into the hens section. After 1 hour the hens were brought in and went into the cock section where they were fed. In your position as we are now into April you can put the cocks out in the evening and put the hens back through to their own section where they will feed the youngsters. When the young want to go out they can either go with the cocks or hens as they wont exercise until they are ready but once they start to go out then keep them with the hens. This system will bring rewards but will need tweeking to suit your circumstances.
  9. Brought birds in before and they went dull with ruffled feathers then took other problems. The fault was with the seller who had been feeding the birds with antibiotics to make them look good prior to selling and destroyed their immune system. Just watch and observe for Canker or Pox.
  10. Another little tit-bit Andy is the difference between box perches and V perches. With box the birds stand in their own crap whilst with V perches any bird with no crap on the V is in great order as its droppings are perfect and have rolled off. observation once again.
  11. Yes Andy and I have always maintained observation is the key to success.
  12. I can assure you Andy if their was any kind of hatchery for game birds locally I would be their best customer especially for racing under 200 miles. Owen please take note your widowers don't have a look in with hens under this system.
  13. In the 70s I used to go to a Guinea fowl breeder and buy a dozen hatching eggs from his incubator and slip them under hens which had been sitting overdue eggs, when they hatched out in the afternoon the chicks would run about the nest box and because I had removed the cocks earlier the hens would be google eyed at them but the amount of winners was exceptional especially when the hen started to chase after up to 4 in a nest box and wondering why they did not want fed. Many winners were clocked under this motivation and poolers were guaranteed. It was a great disappointment when the hatchery closed down.
  14. At the flea pit I frequented you would have been a certainty tae prove you weren't a shirt lifter back in the days when it was not politically correct.. If you know what I mean. { for the pilgrims }.
  15. I stopped buying sea fish when I was charged £10 a Kg at Tesco yet it was only £2 a Kg on the quay side. Wonder where the £8 profit went. The raw deal is the fishermen and the consumer.
  16. Jings an help ma Boab, Here's me thinking you were on a par with me age wise Wattie ! Disco's !! in my day it was Ballroom Dancing or the soft shoe shuffle at the flea pit with the winkle pickers but I did not hae high heels on mine as that would have been a roond the back joab fur a bit of entertainment LOL. Marvellous Memories..
  17. In an earlier post I mentioned the fact Brian Long the owner of Red Barcelona had a breeding system and artificial insemination was the preferred line of obtaining as many as possible. He informed me that the previous year he had taken 100 young from Red Barcelona. That is the answer as to why there are so many with his blood lines and I would estimate their would be at least 200 offspring before Brian passed away.
  18. Far be it to contradict the experts above however I have a little experience on cutting polycarbonate as well as plastic sheeting and from past encounters with both using a Jig saw or sharp wood saw I encountered problems with splintering. Seeking advice I was told to purchase a BAHCO LAMINATE SAW £12.00 on the internet and using it on polycarbonate amongst other materials it is a wonderful tool which leaves no ragged edges due to the formation of the teeth. For fitting I would use plastic cover washers for screwing down. Ex Handyman and Gardener to Lords and Ladies.
  19. What a day ! Greenhouse exploded and 6 panes of glass shattered in a 15ft radius round the lawn, 8ft window blown off the front of loft and entire corner house roof flashing scattered up to 50 yards away all before 08.15. went for the newspapers and the wife complained they were wet although they were tucked inside my boiler suit. Feckin soaked to the skin freezing and she complains about damp papers ! What a life.
