  1. My mate stopped training and has won every race since and 9 Fed tickets. When speaking to John Bosworth the other night he reiterated he does not train after the first race nor does the Padfield family.

  7. Tuesday morning I put 60 Kgs of feed into a drum then decided it was not where it was supposed to be so lifted it and dislocated spine discs so, being at a loose end sitting with a heat lamp on my back and bored to tears as I had hedges to cut which was going to have to wait till recovery has taken place I reckoned I could start a little controversy hence this post. Having instigated over 1,000 views no doubt some fanciers would have thought I may be correct or I could have something their. I can only thank those who posted replies whether you thought it was drivel or otherwise but this is what Basics is about to my mind.
  8. That will be worth trying Wattie. Cheers.
  9. Still on the subject a local fancier purloined a couple of old Fed baskets and removed the backs from them and put drinkers on them inside the loft, He then filled the drinkers with blue baking died water and after 7 days checked out all his birds and was quite dismayed to find that less than 10% had the blue dye in their mouths.
  10. Thats funny John because the same thought has been going roon ma heid
  11. I tried it with 25 in a pannier John and they still did not drink and that was why I tried it the following year with 15.
  12. A club I visit pretty regular do the same and normally have 4 baskets for cocks and 4 for hens laid out on trstle tables with drinkers and our observations were, natural cocks lifted off nests which are vey few would take a drink but hens never dipped their beaks.
  13. Done it all in the past John, putting 15 birds in each race pannier for 7 days. Never apart from the odd one took a drink after a feed and never had to top up But every 12 hours splashed water into the drinkers. No disrespect but you concluded this was JYO rather than hard facts on HOW to encourage them to drink.
  14. Hi John, Perhaps you could elaborate on basket training birds to drink !! ?.
  15. In this day and age with the benefit of weather stations etc, Are we doing the birds a disservice by not having holdovers ?. The reasoning regarding this comment was discussed at length last night where in the past the birds went on the Friday night regardless and in the event of a holdover situation they learnt to drink or if not they were within flying distance of home where if they were observed on arrival those that went directly to the drinker were those who had to be taught by other methods to take water on a transporter. The situation that is at present where forecasts rule out a Saturday liberation marking occurs when a liberation is more favourable which saves the fancier costs BUT does not educate the birds. Its the usual story of making transportation as cheap as possible to the detriment of the birds. To take this subject a little further !. When National birds are basketed they are confined for a minimum 2 days plus more in a holdover and if they have no experince of drinking in a basket then losses are at their greatest. Perhaps in hindsight it would benefit birds to be basketed on a transporter during the winter months to condition them into using the drinkers. You never know as it might just cut down losses.
  16. It was Rab, From Carstairs into the Forth Valley from 10.00 till 18.00 hrs.
  17. Am no surprised as its not got a keyboard :emoticon-0126-nerd:
  18. Its there to be part of the equation in my opinion.
  19. In reply to Yeboah I do understand what it is like being a race controller as I do have experience and was trained by Andy Durning. My gripe with Saturday's "race" is Solway were roughly 20 miles South of us and went at 10.30 yet we did not go till 11.30. Appleby weather station was forecasting on an hourly update 90% rain with total cloud cover "no sunshine" and satellite weather pictures showed a band of extreme weather from Newcastle to the Irish Sea which would be about 50-60 miles South of your position in Moffat. Older experienced birds made it through. The yearlings were decimated. In my day we did not have the advantages we have now with local weather stations or satellite upgrades and I depended on line of flight every 25 miles from phoning experienced fanciers. We are only human and infallable BUT to me this "race" disaster was avoidable.
  20. Sick is not the word I would normally use for the debacle that constituted what could not be described as a race from Charnock Richards especially when a liberation took place and the birds were heading into very heavy rainstorms a couple of miles into the North. It has been proved that the Shap was shut down with low cloud and thunderstorms taking place and had been since early morning according to my source in the Appleby area where it never ceased raining the whole day. The result speaks for itself in our club where only 3 yearlings were timed in the first 20 with a massive loss of yearlings we have nothing to take us forward into the future. From 160 bird sent in the club there are aproximately 60 yearlings still to return. I am willing to appologise for my tongue in cheek remarks made on Saturday directed in jest at Lanarkshire and your race controller was spot on, unlike ours who destroyed many of our hopes and aspirations. P.S. So yir lookin fur a dug that can cook Wattie ?? Aboot that young yin !! or the wifes gettin anither phone call LOL
  21. Rab, I can honestly say that I have never in 53 years had a worse race for returns.
