What I cannot figure out about this post is WHO INFORMED YOU THAT YOU HAD PARAMYXOVIRUS IN YOUR LOFT ?.in fact has any body on Pigeon Basics had this virus and who informed you ?. Was it your vet or the guy down the street or you have read about the symptoms elsewhere and surmised your birds were infected... The reason I am asking is DEFRA would have been involved and sent their vets, samples would have been taken which takes 7 days to analyse and they would have officially informed you but I haven't read anywhere that this procedure has been carried out.

Martin, Never had Para or YBS and have used in the past expired dates of vaccine. So I would have no hesitation in using yours. Perhaps the pharmaceutical guys posting could perhaps explain why the Chevita vaccine has an 18 month expiry on there bottles when Columbovac always appear to have 6 month expiry on every bottle I have ever purchased.!!

Think you are clutching at straws Walter with the theory of air entering a used vaccine bottle. Have we not all watched a programme on telly where mass vaccination takes place and the Doctors/Nurses use the same needle from the same bottle to jag everyone ! no cross contamination there and just to add a little extra I have watched cattle being jagged for T.B. from previously used large bottle by vets. Worst thing I did this year was jagging ALL my Y/B together instead of my usual couple at a time coming out the nest and I never throw half a bottle of vaccine away as I will use it the following year out of date or not..

I believe I am correct in stating that their are no antibiotics listed under the small animal exemption laws and they are all prescription drugs. Should antibiotics be required from a veterinary practice I would expect you would be told the course length and in all probability quarantine period NOT dose to-day and race to-morrow as some of our pharmacists in the fancy would no doubt do. Please refrain from telling me it does not go on.

The answer to your question is quite obvious.

In my humble opinion anyone administrating Baytril or any other antibiotic in the racing season to their birds should be banned from racing. It is my opinion that these antibiotics is one of the main causes of all our troubles from old and young bird losses, young bird sickness and passing on other ailments in the basket. Those so called fanciers have created within their birds no immune system and they are infecting the race teams of those who do not administer drugs haphazardly.
