Thanks Derek, you are a hard man to to catch at all races but especially at these. However, I do know that you are Glasgow Federation sprint champion for 2019 so that will stand you in good stead.
  2. There are tables of relative feed values of individual grains on the Internet. The manufacturers of pigeon grains often describe their mixtures on their web site and how best to use them. Bamfords Top Flight site is quite helpful. If you search PIPA there is some good reading there. Be aware that there are many proteins and that is why grain manufacturers recommend a mixture of several grains to provide a comprehensive selection of proteins. There have been many good races won feeding beans there is nothing wrong with feeding beans.
  3. The diet the birds receive immediately before basketing and, more importantly, in the event of a holdover can also contribute to dehydration. Protein requires more water for digestion than both carbs and fats.
  4. Ayrshire are at Dunbar this week.
  5. I think if you report it through the SHU web site you will get an automated reply almost immediately.
  6. SU19R 440 Flying name Lord of the Wings. Having said that Syndicate Lofts claim they were first although they were actually 74th.
  7. I believe he is having a purple patch having won 2 hotspots on the same day.
  8. Parasite control is all about delivering a lethal dose of an appropriate anti parasitic chemical. I feel, Derek, that your pigeons will still be worm infested even after your diligent treatment. I would personally favour an alternative treatment to a smaller cross section which would be given a head start at liberation to see if the others could beat them home.
  9. Ayrshire Federation had almost full returns from their first race while the second was a disaster.

Yes that Bamfords best all round is rocket fuel. 4/6 now better returns than we had at the second young bird race on Sunday

3/6 now so well done to the race controllers and all the workers.

I enjoyed it immensely thanks David. Now on with the drudgery of young bird racing, what an anticlimax.

The SNFC are sponsored by Bamfords. Given that Bamfords formulate and manufacture mixes I need to assume that they have some knowledge of nutrition. I would suggest a good starting point would be to ask for recommendations from them or alternatively follow the example of those who are clearly light years ahead of ourselves. As it stands the progressive fancier is penalised by the dinosaur. Quality Mike.

Personally Mike I think this is a subject we should address in a more professional manner. I have changed my feeding this year to a mix which contains peas simply because this is what they are fed in the transporter. In 1980 I bought pigeons from Dr. horn. On receipt these immediately lost body and didn’t eat much. When I phoned him I was told that his mixes didn’t contain the high protein grains we traditionally used and as a result they couldn’t cope with them. His mixes contained a great deal of safflour. I firmly believe that we should be feeding a high percentage of fats especially when liberation is imminent.

Yes that was the information I received about the Barcelona race. The reason why they feed high carbs is to protect the stored fats which the birds later use as fuel. This makes a great deal of sense to me.

Davie, I think Derek’s question was about how the Barcelona pigeons are fed. I believe the grain used is significantly different from the mix the SNFC use. just as an aside any organisation which is likely to hold the birds in a basket for several days should publish the details of the grain they intend to use to allow fanciers to introduce this to their birds during the season if they wish.
  18. Super performance well done.
  19. Thanks guys, I just hope the form lasts for a week yet.
  20. Xc is easily understood but pretty inaccurate. The met office site is now available in app form. It is less easily understood than some others but gives the most accurate data.
  21. Great to see the Glasgow Federation results posted online. Well done Andy.
  22. I note that Lee Fribbins has also had birds stolen while he was at work today.
