    Hot Weather

In theory pigeons which have Buff type feathering as opposed to Yellow type feathering would be better suited to a hot climate as Buff is better ventilated and allows the pigeon to cool down. The opposite would be the case in a wet climate as Buff feathering is less waterproof. Buff and Yellow are often referred to as sacking and silk.
  2. I see one pigeon recorded in Section A. There is little chance of any into the west at the moment visibility is poor.
  3. Well done guys. I hope John gets a decent nights sleep now. This is just reward for all the effort which went into rebuilding after the fire.
  4. Thanks Andy. I’m still on the case, at least when I can get online as my grandchildren are here. I’m reading up on some background just now. It’s confusing because some sources speak about K index as a thunderstorm predictor and some as a guide to solar flare activity. I know that the met office will provide specialised weather reports which are chargeable. That’s a road we should have gone down years ago.
  5. Thanks for that Robbie. Any further information as the weekend approaches would be useful. Since your post I have been trying to read up on the subject but I feel it’s very heavy going.
  6. I am certain that the erratic returns were more due to the static in the atmosphere than to the easterly winds especially for pigeons flying from east to west. A race controller couldn’t justify cancelling a race as he felt there was going to be static in the atmosphere. That decision is the fanciers to take. That was an interesting post from Geordie 1234 regarding a “joint liberationâ€

    Wild Rabbits

If they have access to beneath the loft their presence can stop your birds resting properly at night. Not a serious problem but enough to stop them winning.
  8. No problem this end and apologies if I was slightly nippy last night.
  9. The original post mentions "Unikon battery power adaptor" so he can take his pick.
  10. The most recent rice I saw was about 6 months ago and it was £20.40 which included vat.
  11. Years ago pigeons were routinely trained by train. Everyone had smaller teams then as there were fewer losses to Predators. Most pigeons know the way home so training of natural pigeons is mainy to improve fitness.
  12. Merry Christmas Peter. Hopefully you will see an improvement in your health soon.
  13. R.I.P. Ian
  14. I found the show to be a really good day out. As far as I am concerned it’s an opportunity to chat with friends old and new. The number of pigeons competing was up from last year and I feel there were also more fanciers present. The sale pigeons were reasonably priced. Long may this show continue to prosper.
  15. I don’t honestly know but I expect they were from these origins.
  16. Hugh Gray from Maybole shows these with success.
  17. Somehow when you first commented I thought on Dickie Graham. He had several fans in my area who introduced his birds. I assume you mean the big blue pied Delbars. These are normally just slightly big for me but beautiful pigeons.
  18. I understand now. In my mind I was over complicating the issue thinking that the lack of water would have changed the way they handled.
  19. I have only really entered shows half heartedly. I thought about it last year and sourced some fuel. I believe Zippo lighters still use this. As Susan asked why no water the night before?
  20. I don’t show pigeons but I can remember fanciers cleaning their plumage with cigarette lighter fuel. Note- stay well clear of naked flames when doing this.
  21. Unfortunately the original post states from 500 miles. For me there can only be one best and that simply has to be J and A Donaldson. Even fanciers like Paul Swindell have used these bloodlines to enhance their distance capability.

  23. Past SHU President. I am sure there will be some decent pigeons on sale.

I think they are allocated on a first come first served basis.
