philg50 Posted December 13, 2017 Report Posted December 13, 2017 My birds have been shut up for the last 3 weeks not because of weather etc but the bluddy sparrow hawk ,the hen disappeared from here a while ago so i think its the cock bird thats the problem ,maybe the weather will get it,hunger i hope
Roland Posted December 13, 2017 Report Posted December 13, 2017 They are well wise to the sparrahawk. I've seen it more this winter than any other . And nae lost een tae it as yet . Long may it continue Some truth there. Mine, like Sunday last, just rise up high above them. Have a few feral around too. Make great 'Watch Birds. Some, I did once, have a feral or two that come into the loft. Left to be at home, cleaned up for this very purpose.
walterboswell59 Posted December 13, 2017 Report Posted December 13, 2017 lots of guys saying there birds flying longer in the winter imo a lot of this is to do with what we feed in winter most guys will have barley in there mix or feeding a light mix are the birds finding there correct flying weight just like the saying fat birds dont win fat birds do not want to fly any lenth of time think its all about what your feeding winter and summer how they fly at home or race but thats jmo my birds are out everyday rain snow or wind unless i think there is a danger of being injured
cemetary Posted December 13, 2017 Report Posted December 13, 2017 Try and get the birds out as much as I can, cold or not, get them cleaned out, then back in. No extra food given when cold, same as they got racing, just a different mixture this time of the year, they don't fly too much though, but not bothered, I get my jobs done and that's all I want to do when its cold just now.
blue lad Posted December 13, 2017 Report Posted December 13, 2017 Very ture Walter as regards winter feeding I've fed my birds Irish mix and high protein low fat. Had two pigeon fanciers Round to house today working. And after they Finnished. They came over to have a look at the birds . Both commented on how All birds handled perfect condition despite a flight or two to come in some.Says it all .Get them out .

Roland Posted December 14, 2017 Report Posted December 14, 2017 theres plenty over this way they are every where now Nah that is a myth... Nigh everywhere maybe. Over populated by far in many places. Only ever been one, maybe two here about. Mind both moved on after a day or so. S/H a nuisance sure, one Goss hawk that visits the lib site as soon as the transporter comes. So yes we are lucky I guess. Have said that, and let's be clear here, though they do a lot of damage etc. they take a lot of blame undeservedly so... But then the 'Fancier' is and has been the biggest problem in this regards.
