Walter swanston Posted March 13, 2017 Report Posted March 13, 2017 I should have known better after all old age is supposed to bring wisdom but I thought I was going to be spared the attention of sparrowhawks this spring until Sunday afternoon when I lost a fine blue bar young pigeon. torn to bits and eaten while I was on the telephone ,I suppose I must blame myself for inattention. However it is hard to avoid becoming discouraged when the racing season is fast approaching and exercising birds becomes problematic I have no wish to incur the scorn of the more forthright contributors on this site but sparrowhawks are a constant difficulty in Dumfriesshire each spring.
greenlands Posted March 13, 2017 Report Posted March 13, 2017 Walter, try one of these mate,I'm sure it's working for me and simple to make. The cane is loosely stapled to the fence so with the least bit of wind it moves, originally put up for a persistent bloody cat. The crow is a decoy used by the lads that do a bit of shooting.
cemetary Posted March 13, 2017 Report Posted March 13, 2017 Sparrow Hawk hen trying to get fattened up before she goes to nest shortly, it had a go at my birds in the aviary the last couple of days, you have to be on your guard just now when the birds are out.
greenbar Posted March 13, 2017 Report Posted March 13, 2017 Had some of ours out this morning,2nd time in 6 weeks, per y floating about but chased by the jackdaws, all accounted for,1st time for a long time,
border terrier lofts Posted March 15, 2017 Report Posted March 15, 2017 Had birds out this morning, flew well for about 30 min then landed, about 10 min later CARNAGE birds everywhere female sparrow hawk knocks ,one to the ground while managing to save bird it then knocks another down put first bird into brown bin, so as to save second bird, while saving second bird it then knocks third bird down, managed to save third bird not much damage to birds, but me my heads wasted. 4 weeks to first race , can't get birds out this is the main reason why racing should be put back a couple of weeks to give the birds a chance to get fit. Too many pigeons are being lost in the early races because they are not ready to race. When are FEDS are Feds going to waken up . Racing in mid April Madness, it's time fanciers put there birds first and gave them a chance.RANT OVER.
greenbar Posted March 15, 2017 Report Posted March 15, 2017 We let some of ours out today, after cleaning out,it took all of 2mins for the hen sparrow to appear, made a few dives at the birds, before the jackdaws and rooks hounded it.as it was leaving the male sparrow turned up,got the same treatment as the female, indeed happy bloody days
