I will need to get back to Jock, see of he rembers a bit more about it. I remember him telling me that he was invited to the very famous Peoples Show in London and was asked by the organisers to bring the pigeon along for all to see, the "Osmans" and "John Taylor" (Barcelona Winner) of "Newslad Fame" in attendance. The old fanciers will remember the Peoples Show in Londons Alexandra Palace im sure. Boy those must have been the days! :peace-sign-258:

Think im right in saying my m8 Jock Mackenzie from Pittenweem now Arncroach had the first ever recorded pigeon home from Barcelona over 1,000ml.

That was in the 1950's the pigeon was a white hen. Jock now 80 years young was just a young man at the time flying in partnership with his Uncle.

Not sure how long the pigeon took to get home but a few fanciers of the time gave him a bit of a ribbing for taking so long.

However Jocks answer was that she wasnt exactly a slouth as she had previously won 10th Open Fife Fed Weymouth around 400ml Fife was 2nd biggest fed in Scotland. She was also 35th Open SNFC Nantes 623mls so maybe i tend to agree with him lol! :emoticon-0140-rofl:

Was just talking about first bird ever recorded from Barcelona here not the longest flying. However 1,140 mls to Abby Bruce is some fly for any pigeon accross the uk terain. Absolutely terriffic! ;)

David, I was under the impression the BICC run in conjuncion, races with IFC with their own, and cannot find in their rules anything regarding GB only rings. Perhaps Scottish BICC members can enlighten us on what would be required.

Whatever you WRITE then just make sure you don't use a word out if context or get you grammar incorrect or our resident English professor will be all over you like a rash :emoticon-0136-giggle: :emoticon-0136-giggle:

Count me in.

40/50 doo men @ £25 a head. 1st pigeon into scotland in race time good prize money, could even have a y/bird sale for transport cost, into the south of england,

Posted

Ur right blue pied at the moment Scotland cant compete in the Internationals until they get the fci logo on the rings. Rule came from continent not uk.

Unfair i feel over a wee daft logo.

However anyone wanting to compete with our European friends can still do so if they start einging their birds with rings that fit the criteria. The thing is youll have to wait 2/3 years or so til their mature enough.

Its endurance Dal, testing the pigeon to the limit. Whats not to love about that?

Give me yer Conditioning tips for that race Derek?......or will ye just send them? Attrition not condition for me

You can race in the bicc with any ring you can't however compete in an international without the FCI stamped rings

To my knowledge thats right Geo. You can still compete with the BICC in any of their races but just would not be duplicated into the International to gain a position because of the fci logo not on the ring.

It seems that since the 50's up to maybe the 80's the longest flying pigeon recorded or the fastest bird recorded from there was swapped about many times. It just seemed that someone wanted to record one flying that bit further or quicker than anyone else in the Country. Or even a quicker time from their distance. Say 1,020mls them some around 1,045. Then some flying further. There was of course the men who wanted to do it 2 years on the trot or even 3 years. Dare i say it but a few tried it 2 or 3 years in a row with the same pigeon.

What im saying is i think over the years a few more tried it than we think. :drinking-coffee-200:

I raised the matter of the FCI Logo at SHU council a few years ago. Initially they felt it would not be cost effective, but John Bird from Prestonpans also mentioned about the Combe's and said there were others. We used to have a deal with the NEHU, but this is now defunct, so we are no longer members of the Federation Colombile International. We are still investigating the matter, but it is not straightforward gaining the required information, neither is it guaranteed that we will be accepted. Without the logo, no pigeon registered after 2015 is accepted into International races. You are still able to race with the BICC or BBC from the International races, however your result will be National only, akin to Federation duplication with the SNFC. Some do it, some just fly with the Fed and therefore do not get on the SNFC result. In the meantime GB rings or, I think, NEHU rings are the only UK rings carrying the FCI Logo. :)

W G Davidson from Kilwinning, an Ardeer Club member, flew Palamos and was well known for this in Kilwinning. I heard him derided for the length of time it took his pigeons to home, but he sent and homed quite a few times. At that time the focus was on how far could the pigeon home from, sort of pushing the distance boundaries, but I am sure there were far fewer peregrines in the sky. The had been culled during the war to ensure the safety of the war pigeons, there were regular culls with fanciers behind the guns and of course the DDT. Changed days!!

There is an increasing interest in Barcelona. Irish fanciers are showing quite some interest and Jim Emerton has promoted the race for some time, putting up prizes for pigeons flying over 800? miles.

A marathon event? Probably, but a modern record or phenomenon if it could be achieved again at over 1000 miles!!

Michael Feeney from Dublin has purchased a draft of Polish pigeons from their Barcelona 2015 winner at over 1000 miles in an attempt at flying into Ireland. :)

Makes sense.... be good if quite a few got together to get to the marking stations.... they are flying 800 900 miles on the continent no reason why the top guys in Scotland can't compete

True, but unlike many places they don't have tiring pigeons then having to cross a cold channel / water or such.

Of course time and location and climate will play it's part on the day.

Would I have a go? A. nigh certainty.

Would agree whole heartedly that many Scottish fancier could and would do it.

Why not propose a 1000 mile race for the agenda of the SNFC to be conveyed in conjunction by the BICC or BBC. Beggar their logo rings remember Brexit, we aint with them any more..and if we can beat them then publish our own International result..

You pay your money you take your chance, there are no guarantees of success regardless of reputation or previous results jmo.

Ps Henry has made a lot of money over the years , I for one would not buy them but cant fault him for trying to make some more , others in every field of life have and will continue to fleece every last penny.

I'm sure Henry Mairs pigeon Lionheart was something like 1st 3rd & 9th into Scotland and every time it was Palamos. If thats not correct no doubt someone will correct me. A brave pigeon tho no doubt!

If you do a search for 100 years of Racing Pigeons into Ayrshire you will find some useful information there. I think chapter 7 is the relevant passage. The text was written and compiled by Bobby Kennedy who was friendly with Henry and , indeed I think they worked in the same factory in Irvine.

The record into Ayrshire was established by "Faith which was owned by WG Davidson.

Henry's timed on 3 occasions 3rd and 23rd are the only 2 positions mentioned but his 3rd which was with Lionheart was not even close to the record set by Faith.

The record was then beaten by Alan Raeside's Conqueror which took just over 2 days for the journey.

Note when I say record I only speak about into Ayrshire.

I don't know how to paste a link from the iPad or I would have done so.
