ALF Posted July 23, 2016 Report Posted July 23, 2016 I have a question for yeez We had a blether/argument and a lot of shouting in the pub earlier Right the question was is it easier to get a ticket in the SNFC gold cup race or to win your club old bird averages? Answers please?
ALF Posted July 23, 2016 Author Report Posted July 23, 2016 Old bird averages easier Another question how many times have you won the old bird averages in your club?
Delboy Posted July 23, 2016 Report Posted July 23, 2016 Easier to get a ticket in the Gold cup, because if ye emptied yer dookit into it ye more than likely would sneak a ticket or two,

ALF Posted July 23, 2016 Author Report Posted July 23, 2016 It's a dodgy question that caused a bit of an argument in the pub earlier thats why i put it on here
VMS Posted July 23, 2016 Report Posted July 23, 2016 Individually harder to score from the gold cup, collectively harder to win avarages.simple :emoticon-0136-giggle:
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted July 23, 2016 Report Posted July 23, 2016 It's not something that can be based one season or one club/fed. If you at it over many years, you'll probably find John McNeill of Broxburn is the best there is,was and has ever been.

I only mentioned those fanciers as they often do/did win the old bird average and score in the Gold Cup in the same seasons and are exceptional fliers at every distance.
walterboswell59 Posted July 25, 2016 Report Posted July 25, 2016 this season has been my worst in the past ten years but will be my sixth year on the trot winning the old bird average lost a life times work at reims not seen a feather from the six best birds ive ever owned but still live in hope some will turn up and ive no dout another star will shine next year but to be fair i did not put the same work into my club racers and was happy to see jim getting a turn in the early races made a few mistakes this year to but that will be sorted next year always learning but since a small boy starting in pigeons have been of the opinion that the old bird average winner was the best flyer in the club but also learned many good birds are lost chasing averages as your birds need to be on the ball every week and you are tempted to send birds that should not be sent or should be stopped and put by for next year we all do it and sometimes pay the price ive tried to teach jim if you cant afford to lose a bird dont send it simple but at the end of the day you have to beat your club members first before you start thinking of the big picture and its great on presentation night a national ticket is what it is a position in one race and great to get one but your club is the bread and butter imo but if your birds are flying well in the club and you set them up for the nationals the following year your national tickets will come if you have the right birds for the job but its a long year for a few national races if you dont get one so flying well in your club can make a bad season not so bad try telling jim or any trophy winners on presentation night when he goes up for his cup he has had a bad season lol if you win any trophy in a decent sized club you have won more than your share and is something to build on so well done all trophy winners in all clubs
JohnQuinn Posted July 25, 2016 Report Posted July 25, 2016 If you set birds up with an individual race in mind and the race isn't a complete disaster you ought to be timing from the chosen race, Gold Cup or otherwise. If you start out intending to win the Averages there are many more hurdles to jump and the demand to keep the birds on top form for 3 months is IMO far more difficult to achieve. BUT ye can win the Averages without winning a race and a Ticket fae the Gold Cup is more attractive than a dozen also ran tickets at club level.
peter pandy Posted July 25, 2016 Report Posted July 25, 2016 Winning Club Averages can be quite demanding and I have won a few over the years.I remember Jim Bennet who wrote under the pseudonym "THE BAIRN" in The Racing Pigeon Gazette 1970s winning the Fed Average 1978 and packed them in the same year. Meeting up with him 10 years later at a football match I asked him why ?, and he replied "All I set my sights on I won, so their was nothing left that I wanted to do". I had to admit that when the brother and I were Federation Champions it was all I wished to do as well and can remember the night after the last race that year saying to friends I am so glad the season is over so I can relax. 2 months later I was off abroad to work as I too had felt their was nothing else I wanted to win. Perhaps it was the location where you had to be practical and admit you were in an impossible position National wise, So why beat your brains out trying to prove something that is impossible to achieve.

Roland Posted July 25, 2016 Report Posted July 25, 2016 I used to say that winning say, say like the Up North Combine, was harder than winning a National. 3 -4-5 -6 times even the amount of birds than a National .... ALL heading same way. Like Antwerp where they come over flying low to one area! Quickest clocker - better management? - wins. Nationals spread out to different sections etc. over a wide scan. So I'd say a section even win even, in a national if by far harder to achieve. JMO.
Froog Posted July 25, 2016 Report Posted July 25, 2016 There is no answer to such a daft Q......typical pub argument ....every one to their own
walterboswell59 Posted July 26, 2016 Report Posted July 26, 2016 now days its an achievement to have birds left to compete in every race which is a sad fact of how our sport going but to be competitive in every race club fed and national is very hard and its much easier to choose one or the other or if you just have a small team only send to the races that interest you most that way if you win your king for a day if you dont you can always say aye but i only had six away lol
