Delboy Posted August 22, 2014 Report Posted August 22, 2014 These are my reasons for yb losses and how I would remedy them. 1. YB Sickness, this can be helped ( but not entirely cured )by going back to basics and getting everyone to bring ALL their ybs down to their club to get vaccinated for pmv all at the same time. It has been proven that PMV is connected with YBS and I think if we went back to what we used to do before the sickness happened, it would reduce the outbreaks by a large margin. Also, every member should have their own baskets at the club for training and racing in yb racing, this reduces cross infection dramatically, especially in the first 3 or 4 races. 2. BOP, they scare the living crap out our poor ybs and cause devastation when they strike. I differ from most and do not believe we have to learn to live with this massive problem. Remedy-I think every single racing pigeon marked in Britain on one specific weekend should have a repellent on their back / neck going to the race. BOP problem sorted in ONLY ONE DAY !!!!!! . 3. Clashing, undoubtedly we have a great deal of clashing especially on the east coast. Remedy is- Every Governing body ( SHU, RPRA,NEHU,NWHU, WHU etc etc ) should be controlling the yb races. They should communicate with each other and decide what races we fly from and on what day of the weekend. There would be minimum clashing if it was executed properly through the Governing bodies. 4. Origin, I definitely believe we are losing the plot when bringing in all these sprint/middle distance pigeons from Europe. If you think back to the 70s, every single fancier had distance/all round pigeons and everyone had similar goals ( to score from the distance races ).Losses were minimum because the pigeons had stronger constitutions then. NO MEDICATIONS , only the spade was used to eradicate weaklings regardless of parentage and pigeon racing was definitely easier. Food for thought.

harky Posted August 22, 2014 Report Posted August 22, 2014 simple answer, don't race young birds .lol
Guest bernie_don Posted August 22, 2014 Report Posted August 22, 2014 i think that the pigeon man of today have good ideas but the old timers are stuck in there ways, letting you know i am 61 come september, but change is needed or the sport is dead in its tracks.
Mossgiel Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 Sort item 2 and racing will improve dramatically for all fanciers, and far more enjoyable The other items we could sort in due course, but for me item 2 needs priority.

bibendium Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 cannae argue with any of your post Del.

Whats it called Cumbernauld Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 As usual interesting stuff Del Well said
frank-123 Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 Del if you could get me the repellent I could train all winter on the east side and it would be nice and clean for next season You could get it yourself for a few pennies.
Roland Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 Del is right. Of course he is! Bilco has been advocating similar for decades now. If he had been listened to and took note and practiced what he said, then the RSPB would be clamouring, begging for the fancy to sit around a table with the governing bodies. Spoke in depth with a Irish man that kept a fancy pigeon. He quite simply stated hardly any trouble with B.O.P. as THEY ARE sorted as soon as they appear. Sound logic. Beside the protection was only for two year in the mid 50's and in reality aren't protected by that law.
b.massey Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 Del if you could get me the repellent I could train all winter on the east side and it would be nice and clean for next season Snap.... On the case tho
dwh Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 was YBS prevalent before the widespread use of the darkness system ?just wondering could the lack of sunshine be causing Vit. B deficiency and could this be exacerbating the effects of YBS?????
john cumming Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 i agree with all your points Del , and especially in the order you have listed them. just need to convince the unions first , fanciers should fall into line then I agree totally with what you are saying, the biggest problem//stumbling block I see is getting everyone to buy into this john
