hotrod Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 If u were on a basket committee and someone entered a young bird that was squeaking , would u let this bird go in race basket ?
alec guinness Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 If u were on a basket committee and someone entered a young bird that was squeaking , would u let this bird go in race basket ? In the 1930s this was a requirement, but no I would not let it go today.
Delboy Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 If u were on a basket committee and someone entered a young bird that was squeaking , would u let this bird go in race basket ? Some birds squeak even when they are older especially when getting bullied in the basket. But if it was a squeaker, as long as it is healthy then it is up to the owner if he enters it or not.The basket convenor looks for injuries and health, nothing more imo. My grandfather had a yb that was a lot younger than the rest of his birds, it had a 6 mile toss and was jumped into Penrith 102 mls and it topped the fed, it squeaked all the way home lol.( that's true )
cemetary Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 As long as the owner is notified, and he makes the final say if it goes or not. Some guys through the years have picked up the wrong birds. :emoticon-0136-giggle:
Wiley Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 You don't see it as often as you did say 10 years ago...but when I've sent youngsters that still squeek I send them and expect a performance they always turn out my best, they have the get up a go attitude that early bred youngsters do not have.
blue pied Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 i wouldnt send them squeaking but if someone wanted to and thinks there strong enough to come home and been trained i wouldnt stop them
hotrod Posted July 13, 2014 Author Report Posted July 13, 2014 The youngster in question was getting hammered in the basket and was squeaking like mad , I took it out and it was only on its first flight , I said to the owners g,son as the member was not there , he said he would take it home , turns out this was bred in March and still squeaks ,to me must be something wrong with it then , , thought it was wrong to have this bird away plus in case it was a mistake ,wrong bird lifted maybe in hurry ?, ,seemingly the member was not too happy today at clocks.

We man Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 If u were on a basket committee and someone entered a young bird that was squeaking , would u let this bird go in race basket ?Yes,unless the the club had a rule stating no squeakers in basket,if the bird had an injury etc no,personaly I would be more concerned about "squirts"than "squeaks JMO.
Roland Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 I'd have no problem at all with it. Y/b's as young as 7 weeks - have won races. The very most I'd do is ask the owner if he meant to be sending it. Simple reality and truth is that many birds, youngsters and old birds alike, are sent week in and week out by fanciers that deem it very unlike that they are able and fit / conditioned enough to be in the basket. Nothing is, or can be said then. Having said that, when president of a club there was a stink regards the state of a pigeon being sent (the owner wasn't there and another club member bought his birds to the marking station). A 3 year old grizzle it was, and his so call mate was harping on about this and that and disgraceful etc. Murmurs as to it being sent week in and week out and in this condition, till many club members were voicing an opinion. I took a look at it and simple said it goes and end off. It timed well next day and a week later won a very hard distance race ... being sent in a far worse condition than the previous weeks according to members.
