Thanks craiga lot will depend on "how swollen" it is Craig ? would get another pair of hands to help ,if you cant nibble away with a small pair of wire cutters ,then it will have to be held firm ( a vice ?) and gently strokes with a mini hacksaw .the rings are only aluminium so shouldn't be a problem .have a first aid kit to hand ,just in case , and good luck.
Guest CraigForsyth Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 Okay thanks a lot Andy I'll get my mum or dad to hold it Craig
THE FIFER Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 I done mine with a large nail file, takes a bit longer but easier on the bird, another thing is the file you get for dogs nails
peter pandy Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 I had a tool specifically designed for cutting rings off but unfortunately cannot find it nor am I able to say who supplies them although I have a funny hunch it could be Boddy & Ridewood

peter pandy Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 One solution is to take a small dremel disc cutter that fits on a drill and bobs your uncle its off B&Q will probably supply
buster151 Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 Craig before you cut the ring of go round to one of your club mates if possible and ask them to have a look at your doo . I would also say this
William Reid Posted October 29, 2013 Report Posted October 29, 2013 Before you cut off the ring make sure it's not just scale mite
Big Davie Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 Before you cut off the ring make sure it's not just scale mite Billy is correct, this is usually down to scale deposits beneath the ring, get something that is thin but firm enough to push between the leg and the inside of the ring without doing too much damage to the tissue, the thin end of a plastic cable tye is perfect for doing this, then gently but firmly work this in between the leg and the base of the ring until it comes out the top, keep doing this around the circumference of the ring until all of the scale / debris is cleared, don't be tempted to twist the ring on the leg until it is loose or you will strip the flesh off down to the bone, then it will have to come off, i have done this many a time with success, once any damage to the leg has healed then the ring should be turned frequently to prevent it reoccurring, if it is tight then immersing in some soapy water will help

ovy1255 Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 dont use a dremil or a hacksaw blade-----------use a pair of pliers to nip the plastic and crack it allowing the plastic to be removed then useing a pair of nail clippers nibble at the edge of the ring slowly tearing it apart with the nail cutters -never failed and no bleeding after i get the ring off.

Guest CraigForsyth Posted October 30, 2013 Report Posted October 30, 2013 has the bird got a limp if not leave alone, i have one or two old stock birds with tight rings but dont bother them at allWhen ever I come into the loft the bird is lying on it's chest on the floor Craig
Guest Dorset-lad Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 When ever I come into the loft the bird is lying on it's chest on the floor Craig Hi, there must be someone local to you to have a look at this bird for you, like someone has said a club mate, have you thoroughly checked the foot made sure there is no twine around any of the toes ? you will be surpriced how it digs into the skin and you have a job to see it, might be worth another look before you cut the ring off, is it just the one leg swollen, check other joints maybe give some calcium. jmo
philg50 Posted October 31, 2013 Report Posted October 31, 2013 Is there no one in your club willing to advise or have a look at the bird for you, if not poor show I would have came over but not long out of hospital after a turn again so not on the go yet hope someone helps you out .
