paddymac Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 Andy do some fanciers put virkon 's'in drinking water. As I read a article while back about American loft who swears by it ?The American fanciers you mention are the Mc Laughlin lofts, I use it to disinfect my lofts but not in the birds drinking water.
andy Burgess Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 Andy do some fanciers put virkon 's'in drinking water. As I read a article while back about American loft who swears by it ? you would be very surprised how many use it or have used it in the drinking water . there was an article on site stating a dosage too , a while back now tho ?
Roland Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 Actichlor plus. Used to use Virkon S ... Which is undoubtedly good. But when I found out that Actichol was used in hospitals because of MSR etc. I switch. Cost effect to boot. I use the tablets, personal, in warm water. Also often mixed in a good dollop of bleach... Wear a mask if doing that. and spray every where and every thing. P.s. I also use Lime and white mixed on floors. I used a thick mixture of lime and paint every where once a year. I also (sometimes now) put lime in the drinkers over night.
Kyleakin Lofts Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 I have used it in the water on return from races. I am sure I read this could be done. It is used in poultry houses to disinfect the pipes, but they also leave a trace in the system storage tanks, so it is always in the water.Robert Reid has advised against its use and Robert worked in the chemical industry, I believe. Robert is a top flier in Ayrshire, so I respect his advice.
gordon wilson Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 advice from the top Scottish government vets to me was use ordinary thin bleach from Tesco 29p a bottle for drinkers and the loft that is all they use is serious outbreaks of foot and mouth and avian flue inspections it kills all pigeon problems and it will keep your birds trouble free no need for the fancy named disinfectant because they don't work They said vircon was good for Virus but you don't get many cases in pigeons
Roland Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 Good Post Gordon. A lot of realism and truth there. Gordon Chambers told me 'just spray a Parazone. Is good... spray it on the gnats outside and see lol.
PATTY BHOY Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 advice from the top Scottish government vets to me was use ordinary thin bleach from Tesco 29p a bottle for drinkers and the loft that is all they use is serious outbreaks of foot and mouth and avian flue inspections it kills all pigeon problems and it will keep your birds trouble free no need for the fancy named disinfectant because they don't work They said vircon was good for Virus but you don't get many cases in pigeonsThat`s what I use with good effect.
greenlands Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 I was an engineer at the local Dairy when the foot and mouth outbreaks hit the country,Every wagon/car that came on the plant had their wheels/wheel arches sprayed with Virkon S. Didn't realise at the time that it could be used for pigeon lofts/drinkers etc. :emoticon-0127-lipssealed: :emoticon-0127-lipssealed:
leslie24williams49 Posted May 9, 2018 Report Posted May 9, 2018 5ml.per gallon Virkon s. especially when there is disease about, can individually syringe a sick bird with it,kills nasties in crop, if you are short on other stuff to use it is good.
walterbmasson Posted May 10, 2018 Report Posted May 10, 2018 you would be very surprised how many use it or have used it in the drinking water . there was an article on site stating a dosage too , a while back now tho ?Na winer there's massive losses using disinfection in drinking water may not kill yer birds , but it certainly ruin there insides , please Dina gee folk ony ideas that this is bloody good for yer birds , omg fit next ?
Roland Posted May 10, 2018 Report Posted May 10, 2018 Told the Doc once regards bleach in the water. - Not Milton though - he said gosh that will bleach their inside... be really white! Would KILL everything! Agreed that many pigeons that have bleach in water a couple of times a week look and feel great. Bright eyes and beautiful feathering etc. ... But you know, the fact IS that any 'Cull / killer of gut bacteria has NO qualms about what it destroys! The good is killed just the same as the so - called bad. Another reason why I wish to destroy any harmful menaces before they can get inside the birds. I further believe that any one that thinks he can decide what is good or bad, needed or not in a bird is fallible to be classed as stupid. Medic can know only of certain ailments that maybe, or are likely to be caused by a 'Bad Bacteria. They can't give a bird anything that is able to select ONLY the culprit and leave the other much needed bacteria alone. Truth is the simple realisation that we are still very far from understanding what bacteria is needed for what, and why it is there. ... Having said that, we know some bacteria caught / developed can have dire affects on our birds... make a bird very poorly indeed. But often a broad spectrum can have more than a dire effect!
gordon wilson Posted May 10, 2018 Report Posted May 10, 2018 in my report I meant wash out the drinkers and let them drain then fill them with water do not rinse the coating left does the job and has no ill effect on my birds I have done this every day for years with good results
