Have to agree, great read, thanks for the link George. I'm amazed how little training distance is involved to prepare the birds.

The birds are experienced and have no idea how far it is from palamos to the loft. Most fanciers would have no faith in the birds he sends for their first go as they are late from short tosses or races....showing no formal means he has to trust in his bloodlines....well done

Very interesting George.

TREATMENT

They are injected for Paramyxo every January, then immediately afterwards go onto Sulphatrim (a treatment against cocci, enteritis and general bacterial problems), and then they are on multivits before being wormed. The next time they are treated, assuming nothing goes wrong, is when they land from a fly four weeks before Palamos, when they have another 5-day treatment of Sulphatrim or, depending on what my hunch tells me, it could be Ronidazol for canker. I also used pigeon-approved smoke bombs for the first time last year, one month beforehand, and I’ll definitely be doing so again. When I treat in January I can’t honestly say I notice a difference in the pigeons, nor necessarily when I treat a month before Palamos, so it might be the blind leading the blind. I’ve not always been a treater – I would say I was pretty ignorant in my earlier days – but I have modernised over the last fifteen years.

I see it mentioned the late, great Alex Geddes from Glenboig, who flew in the Scottish Midland fed. He was , without doubt one of the best racer/breeders of pigeons in the west section of Scotland.

An exceptional fancier Derek. Grandfather and I visited him a couple of times '79 & '80, when he stayed at Greengairs. He told us his family of pigeons were based on the old Mason 1210 blood [ think Mason was from Barrhead ?? ]. Davie Scott from Brechin had a very good grizzle hen from Alex Geddes and she bred a lot of winners. Jim Donaldson had a lot of birds from Davie Scott and it would not surprise me if the grizzles in his team were down from the Geddes grizzle hen.

Good stuff did masons 1210 not have an Easterhouse connection or Bailleston there's something about the Bailleston grizzles as they were known I remember Andrew Deans talking about it maybe someone could clarify this.?

I think Jim D had doos straight fae Alexs stock loft Brian

Didn't know that Derek. He certainly had birds from Davie Scott. I'm sure Alex Geddes won the Scottish Central Combine in the early 70's from Avranches.
