whatever it is we should have something in the drinking water to save any cross contamination but as the usual will prevale doo men never agreeing with each other good post kojak

putting stuff in the water will not prevent ybs as this is a virus which is transmitted in the air also when pigeons are carrying the virus are sick in the basketthen other pigeons eat that food thats when the spread starts its up to the fanciers who have ybs in there lofts to have a bit of commensence for the sake of other fanciers to stop racing but fanciers still keep sending knowing they have it result is you then have a outbreak of ybs one thing I have proposed in the past to help to try to stop the spread is each fanciers pigeons if possible go into there own baskets on the transporters this would maybe help as if pigeons bring up food then it is only that fanciers pigeons that are getting infected but at the end of the day its up to fanciers to have a wee bit common sense but some aare lacking in this and race at all cost

So Tyson have I got this right if u have say 56 YB u have 2 crates with 28 in each

If I have 10 they have a crate to themselves???.

My birds don't get disinfectant in the water in my loft so I don't want it forced upon them in the basket when they don't need it so am out on that wan :emoticon-0167-beer:

The biggest problem with all yer birds in the same basket is if there is an escape from the transporter. It does happen and if all yer birds are in the same basket they escape from then yer oot the race.

John can you confirm when birds have escaped from baskets how come I never get a turn lol

Tell that to the lads round here when they get YBS ...3/4 teaspoon to a gallon.

The lads that use it say they have had no problems while using it and after YBS. and yes I have used it and will use it again.

I've used Virkon S in the water on return from a race, the birds drink it readily, it is used in the water for chickens, I've read some research about it.

Virkon is the band name of a disinfectant primarily marketed to disinfect poultry sheds. We have had some fanciers contact us saying that they have been advised that putting Virkon in the drinking water is a treatment for Salmonella. This is not the case. I personally have spoken to the product"s manufacturer, Virkon can be safely used in the pigeon loft as a disinfectant and to clean drinkers and hoppers. It has the advantage of not being poisonous if residues are swallowed. Putting the disinfectant deliberately into the drinking water with the belief that this is treating a bacterial infection of the bowel is erroneous.

Your birds get disinfectant in your everyday tap water....its called chloramine.

Vanodine is a disinfectant that specifically states it can be put in the birds drinking water to prevent cross-contamination. It is colour-coded to warn when its effectiveness is wearing off. Virkon is added to the water only to disinfect pipes, drinkers etc.,

 

I used to use both Virkon and Vanodine but stopped years ago after reading that the over-use of disinfectants has exactly the same effect as the over-use of antibiotics - the bugs you're trying to kill become resistant to it.

Virkon produce 2 products. Virkon S and Virkon H2O.

 

Virkon H2O is the product which was formulated for and should be used in the drinking water.

Precautionary : Avoid breathing dust/ fume/ gas/ mist/ vapours/ spray

 

Wash skin thoroughly after handling.

Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.

Avoid release to the environment.

Wear protective gloves. IF ON SKIN:

Wash with plenty of soap and water.

IF INHALED: Remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable for breathing.

 

IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor/ physician. Specific treatment (see supplemental first aid instructions on this label). If skin irritation occurs: Get medical advice/ attention. Take off contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Dispose of contents/ container to an approved waste disposal plant.

 

Given the warnings listed under Hazardous Warnings above I would question the wisdom of giving this product to pigeons in the drinking water unless under exceptional circumstances.

 

Note I have a friend who was employed as a gamekeeper and is now unfit for work due to spraying breeding pens with this product.

 

If someone can highlight a team of pigeons which win out of turn in strong competition then I may change my opinion.

a few years ago i was also told to use virkon s in the water...............had my birds tested sent loads of antibiotics didnt work then told to use the same antibiotics again... in the end i got the black bag out and solved the problem myself.

Why anyone would have their pigeons drink Virkon S baffles me it was developed to be disinfectant to be used on the tyres of vehicles travelling between farms during the foot and mouth outbreaks. Once even saw a fancier syringing it down ybs throats

Pigeon fanciers are like that there not happy unless there giving the doos things that are made for pigs sheep and cows and horses lol.
