Do Dogs And Birds Mix?

I don't think we've lost any birds - but she does get VERY Close - a bit like she's stalking them!

The birds don't seem to have a problem with her

We have 4 y/o Border Collie who has been brought up with the birds.

He herds them up like sheep when they are YB ,

Birds have no fear of him , even walking over him when he lays down in the garden

Protects the lofts from cats and dont try going near without one of us present as he will let you know who.s birds they really are,lol

some are good , others not . my old bull terrier was good with them , laying in the sun in front of the loft letting the birds walk all over him , he was rescued and very intelligent , i still miss him now.

 

my jack russell ive had since a pup , has killed around 6 or 7 ? (all white ones) . our new puppy SBT has had 1 racer , injured , yet she is learning,,,,,, hopefully.

I have two Borderdales. The Dog follows me into the loft and mixes well with the birds but the female I dont trust with them so is barred reason being she climbes up through the hedges and any birds nests are destroyed. Have had them from pups and are now 30 months old.

I have 3 year old german shepherd . who comes in the loft when I go in. He has never hurt a bird yet. the breeding season is the funny bit. he will nudge the cock or the hen out the way with his noise. then licks the babys to death. :emoticon-0136-giggle:

She has an amazing trait of not letting a stray walk about with the others

Had 3 German shepherds the first one def would not touch a pigeon, the second well she eat all my eggs out the nests one week before sartilly combine race, never touched a bird , the third she never looked at a bird , but when I wasn't around my wife wAtched her having a go at one or two when they were on the garden , so u can never be 100% sure they wouldn't take advantage of a situation .

Birds are fine with our lad unless they fly past him, then we need to watch. Cant leave the feed tin lieing around though as he scoffs it

I trust my dog with my life, she somehow knows what birds should be in my yard and what shouldnt, she picks out a stray before we do and she guides them away from the flock like a shepard. Whether it has something to do with the scent i do not know but its anazing how she can tell the difference, as she doesnt even look twice at our own young birds just weaned so i know it isnt sight based

No two dogs are the same, I once had a golden Labrador that spent a lot of time in the lofts amongst the birds and I never had any problems but sadly age caught up with him and he died. I then acquired another Labrador and treated her the same way as the other dog but sadly she got the taste of my birds and ended up killing 6 birds on me before I got rid of her . My wife and daughter now have two house dogs (Bischon Frise) which spend a lot of time in the garden when the weather is good, a bit of a dodgy start but after a few kicks in the rear end and they've soon got the the message

This is Luke, an 8 year old Springer Spaniel. My son got him as a baby and has been with the birds all his life. He is gun trained and has been used for beating on shoots. He is controlled by a whistle as are most gun dogs and has not been on a lead for about 6 years.

 

As you will see in the two video clips, there it is total trust. He has never touched a bird or eggs and the photo shows him inspecting two newly hatched babies. The only problem is he can push the sliding doors open and enter each section but has not learned how to close them. We had a baby Pied Wagtail whom we rescued when it was one day old and unfortunately had a deformed foot. It walked about the house and Luke never touched it except to have a wee sniff. The photo was on one of his trips outside.
