gulkie Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 why dont we stop all the charity, then it may be asked why and spend it on our selfs maybe someone will ask why or tell the[press]
Guest lenwadebob Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 There's alot of factors why the sport and fancy side is dwindling .,...as far as abuse and underhand tatics go ..that will never stop as there to many bad apples around ...jealous bad apples i may add , Promotion for the sport of pigeon racing and the hobby of fancy pigeons and the showing scene needs to be stepped up ..i know theres some measures that have been put in place but a more direct approach is needed. We all talk about no youngsters coming into the pigeon hobby , due to various reasons ...playstations , pcs , ect ect the list is endless..i know ive tryed to get my 17 year old son envolved but theres just no interest there at all. Then you have the price of pigeon products , lofts and the accesories not to mention feeding , the list goes on. Your average teenager couldnt begin to afford such things. Also , in this day an age alot of people look apon pigeons as some sort of vermin ...so they very rarely get any good press. There needs to be some sort of campaign put in place that every uk pigeon fancier can be envolved in....promoting the hobby in their own areas. Maybe a good promotional video or something that can be used via the internet ...anythings worth a try at this late stage. Probably a whole lot of truth in this.... Computers, XBoxes, Playstaions etc are the ruination of youngsters today. Teachers even have a hell of a job getting little Johnny to kick a football in the playground these days, so what chance have we got :-/
Chris Little Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 To answer the question of the thread..... YES !!!! Dont know what it is about us Jocks but we seem to do our sport more damage than the rest of the UK. Politics politics, bickering, backstabbing, jealousy etc is the cancer of our sport. Far too many so called fanciers who cant fly a kite but yet seem to enjoy falling out with others. These are the people that need a reality check, these are the ones who are dragging our sport down and sadly there is a few on this site.
robbiedoo. Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 very well put chris not a truer word said.

hotrod Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 well in our club we have had a few young members coming in ,this last few years , but as they come in sadly we lose some as well , the sport in scotland is split as we all know ,the first thing that would need to happen would be the snfc would have to change their rule about (having to be a member of the SHU) to be a member of any recognised union ,this would bring us all together in 2 possibly 3 years . jmo
Guest youngzimmy Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 THIS IS A HIGHLY COMPETITIVE SPORT AND I DONT THINK IT IS A MATTER OF LET THE NEW GUY WIN IT IS A MATTER OF POINTING THE NEW GUY IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AND SOME WORTHWHILE ADVICE ON HOW TO GO ABOUT IT I PERSONALY WOULD NOT LIKE TO BE ALOUD TO WIN AS A LITTLE ADVICE AND A BIT OF MY OWN EFFORT IS FAR MORE PREFERABLE I GOT SOME ADVICE ON FEEDING FROM ANDY MILLER KNOWING HIM TO BE A REALY GOOD FANCIER I TOOK HIS ADVICE AND WON THE RACE THAT WEEK THERE WAS HARDLY ENOUGH ROOM IN EAST CALDER THAT DAY FOR MY HEID I FELT GREAT

blaz Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 try and get young kids intrested in pigeon racing. i have a young kid very intrested in them he comes round a lot to see the birds with on or two of his mates in tow wee jack s his name. he started at breeding season i thought it would have worn off but no he is still coming round.so at my clubs AGM asked if he was to join would the club be prepared to subsidise his membership. i was told NO he would get all the same privileges as the other members so why subsidise him .he is only 8 years old so his 1st year in club would cost him £70 plus £3.20 a week tote. for me to tell his mum who is a single parent that is the cost and on top of that his feed bill his vaccination bill his medicine bill for IE canker cocci wormier ect . then their is the loft clock and birds. well their is not much chance of her saying yes is their. so that my friends is what it would cost 1st attempt. the 2nd attempt to get jack started in racing is still in the planing process . I WILL DO IT ONE WAY OR ANOTHER then maybe one of his mates might take an interest .it does not solve the decline but evry little helps

Teachers even have a hell of a job getting little Johnny to kick a football in the playground these days, so what chance have we got :-/ although not currently in Scotland ,and not dis-agreeing with your post Bob. its not the pcs or x-boxes that are to blame . i can well remember friday night at the clubhouse ,great saturdays with my father waiting for the birds ,good saturdays when handshaking was going on . i am a pigeon fancier now ,yes ,but back then it was time with my father that was far more preciuos than the birds themselves. andy.
Delboy Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 My oldest boy is a class fancier and he has drifted away from the pigeons because he sees all the politics involved , me not getting in a club etc and he says it takes the appeal of the sport away. How true is this. For me , he had great potential in this sport and Im not just saying this because hes mine, anyone on here that knows him will verify how good he is.
WulDon Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 as we all know clubs and feds are declining in numbers, but more fanciers now race more pigeons which is keeping the birdages quite healthy so i wouldn't say the racing side is in an immediate decline. the biggest problems seems to be that some members are becoming 'control freaks' within these smaller societies, and are actually trying to control the way fanciers are wanting to race there birds and literally telling them what they can and cannot do! this is what is ruining the sport, causing divides, bitterness, proposing silly rules, edging fanciers to move clubs/feds... the list goes on! unfortunately nearly every club & fed has them along with there little followers sticking together to push votes through at meetings etc., these are the fanciers who are unfortunately killing the sport and probably dont even realise it!! will it ever change back? the only hope lies within newly formed clubs who apply new ground rules and reinstate harmony within the sport, pick n choose there members and move forward from there.

Thimbles Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 Up to theage of 16 should be subsidised as long as there not racing the pigeons for someone else like there father trying to pull a fast 1
Thimbles Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 we give over 60s half price fees so why not give the young ones who are the future of the sport a HEALTHY discount
blaz Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 Up to theage of 16 should be subsidised as long as there not racing the pigeons for someone else like there father trying to pull a fast 1 YOU ARE A 100% RIGHT that is my view aswell .how are we to get youngsters in to racing when the price is so high for them to get started
Guest bigda Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 all club members should be made to get sponsors from taxi firms, any one really selling raffles the lot to make this affordable for kids, and the big boys made to pay into the four or five unions, and Blackpool city council also pay us for going there, and hoteliers who gain from us grain merchants, pigeon sellers, traders, loft builders every thing pigeon related, should have been nailed down a long time ago. and its not to late for it to be imposed and if the dont give you dont buy from simple have a black list that way you become someone in sport as a unit
Guest Gareth Rankin Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 Lets not forget that we are no different to any other sport/hobby in the fact that they i.e. golf, bowling, snooker and fishing all lose members each year but they have always been in the position that they attract new members something which the pigeon fraternity has failed to do, the sport has to enhance its image and promote itself to all ages from kids to pensioners with a professional approach which has not been done in the past and look were the sport stands at present.
just ask me Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 great idea bring in kids no doubt but also belive we should be looking at promoting the sport to people that are retiring from work here we have a section of the population that are looking for a daily routine things like retirement conventions etc
