Roundo Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 This is a question for the experienced national flyers.......... Do you think a fancier could be successful from the nationals if they didn't race on a weekly basis or not at all? Cheers,Colin.

Dennis anderson in annan does not race every week to the best of my knowledge and gets his turn
ALF Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 I dont think you would be sending many experienced doos intended for the channel to all the races anyway surely???
geordie1234 Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 Once read Brian Shepherd wasn't in a club and just trained then he joined a club to train the pigeons
philg50 Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 I am nae long back into the doos so its a long time since i tried any thing across the water ,I know that we all would like to fly doos with out training , but in my opinion you have to bring them on with giving them experience and that is in the basket under race conditions and you cant do this in the back of the car, just my thoughts.
Delboy Posted October 26, 2013 Report Posted October 26, 2013 I was 11th open Tours 630 mls with a pigeon that had Gretna 77 mls then trained only.IF THEY ARE FIT, HEALTHY, MOTIVATED AND BRED FOR IT, BOBS YER AUNTY.
Michael J Burden Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 yes you can but losses are an experience you need to consider. They can be very hard but so can club racing nowadays. I have sent Ybs to their only ever channel race NFC and MNFC 300 miles and had them but the next year never timed in. Had 6 one year 3 had races others first time in the race pannier.Had a hen who never had a race as Yb, then as yearling 3 inland races, two 400 miles then one 660 miles races where she scored in all of the races. The year 1997, The race centenary smash, then back again and then Pau NFC another smash. These are super pigeons though bred for the job. Many roads lead to Rome, atb, MJB

Yer old pal Toddler was 1st Section D 12th Open Reims in 2003 with an old hen that had never been further than Carter Bar that season if memory serves me well. Think she was timed around quarter past 9 that evening.
peter pandy Posted October 27, 2013 Report Posted October 27, 2013 Did Dale Newcombe not send a stock bird to Rennes that had never flown out by mistake and was on the result 20 years ago ?.
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted October 28, 2013 Report Posted October 28, 2013 Did Dale Newcombe not send a stock bird to Rennes that had never flown out by mistake and was on the result 20 years ago ?. The Blacks of Dromore made a similar mistake around 20 years ago also. It was a stock hen that looked identical to her nestmate, who was a racer. The bird had however flown out and would have been fit. The way Davie and family can get them going at times they do a power of flying. In fact the year they were 6th,7th,8th and 17th INFC Kings Cup the birds were flying, unforced, for 3-4 hours at a time. Anyway back to that hen. I think the race was the NIPA Old Bird Derby from Dinard. As you can imagine, on realising the mistake, they thought they would never see her again. There was 18 birds on the day into Northern Ireland, of which they had 3. The hen that had never been in a basket in her entire life was the first bird clocked in the country the following morning and was 21st Open if memory serves me well.

Delboy Posted October 28, 2013 Report Posted October 28, 2013 :emoticon-0137-clapping: was it raced before del and did it have plenty of experience for the channel Yes Sammy it had scored from Falaise before and just missed Reims result as a 2 yr old so had plenty of experience. The fact is we don't need to be battering them down the road before their big event, as long as they are super fit/healthy.

She had 5 x 40 mile single ups if my memory serves me right. You must remember that she made a mistake at Gretna and came back feked, I waited on her throwing a flight before I started training her. This showed me she was fully recovered.
