I made the stupid mistake this year as I had last year which was attempting to race O/B from the first to last races losing the bulk of the yearlings at Newbury 330 miles where I sent 15 and to date 8 have returned.

It crawled around in my mind that I would not have enough mortal years left when I should have been taking what I really wanted to do and know what I should have done and carried out a sensible programme instead of pushing them to a distance they were not mature enough for.

I only competed in 4 club O/B races winning 2 first's and 3 seconds and 2 Y/B races before they fell to bits in the moult.

Next year I will not be sending yearlings further than 150 miles, 2 year olds 300 miles and 3 year olds 500 + due to them being slow maturers.

You will be under the sod mate before you get them to where you want at that rate lol. Surely your yearlings need more than 150 to prove their worth? 2yr olds at 300 is a waste in my mind.

This is just my opinion and the under the sod bit is just in jest. I hope your goals are reached.

peter thats over 50 % been over course and distance and 8 doos to pick for as 2 yr old for the longer races next year , if you mess about over a yb season a yearling season to 150 miles 2 year old season to 300 then a 3yr old season to the channel how many will you have left out of 15 birds deffo not 8 nowadays , no many get to 2 yr old nowadays .

your doing no bad m8 i know guys who had 4 times your amount nd dont have 8 left :emoticon-0127-lipssealed: :emoticon-0127-lipssealed:

The birds I have are basically Muller Aardens which are slow developers and if we look at the SNFC distance results their are more 3 year old and above than 2 year olds which will probably make up 80% of the convoy.

Inland racing no longer interests me as its a bit of a lottery regarding loft location, Young bird racing even less.

Patience is the name of the game to me.

firstly ..i have to say im not an all out racing man. I fly for me and me birds, and if im lucky to win or take a few positions, then im happy with that. No national racing here as its a 150 mile round trip to send and if lucky enough to get one its a 150 mile round trip to clock check.

i work full time and have a young family, which means the pigeons work around me, not me around them. I enjoy me birds and to me thats what its all about.

anyhow OBs, only sent to 5 races, 3 inland races and would have made top in all 3 in club, but didnt goto to clock check.

The first channel race i won.

then the french race which i sent 6, turned into a calamity, held for 5 days then brought back to England then released. never saw a feather and i think only 230 were recorded over 3 days from a convoy of about 2500.

was i happy with OBs...mixed emotions

Not bad - 9 firsts in the club 16 lofts and 3 firsts in the fed (190 lofts ish) but behind in the races we should have been closer in - we have a 50/50 split sprint/mid dist and mid/long dist blood so performed well up to 300 mile but underperformed in the longer ones (albeit winning the club and making fed result in them)

Will have 5 fed trophies to collect incl YB avg and longest 2 YB races avg so from that point of view can hardly complain.

Have to have an honest chat with partners if we are going to have so many distance pigeons then sends of 3,4 & 3 to the longer races when we could easily send 20 to every other race is going to be either rectified or good distance lines will be removed from the loft

Will be looking to the likes of Morris boys, Derek McKinlay and Ricky Young as three of the best lofts in Scotland in recent times - these are the benchmark for fanciers in the West imo

Bright spot: seeing 956 come early 2nd day from Ypres, Dark spot: he wasn't anywhere near as close as we though he'd be and despit being his 7th 1st prize and being 7th fed we must do more to justify this good pigeon next season and others like him

This year I only won seven races three or four down than the norm but made up for it by achieving my dream by winning the national my young bird season was rubbish after getting tanked at my first two tosses I never recovered as for next year I would like to time from 500mls plus on the day that's my next target am aiming for as just now its my Achilles heel so roll on the breeding season I've already been looking at some pairs lol desperado

Just a few weeks til pairing up Ricky. You will probably shift your focus because there isn't much left to prove at fed level for you - rightly so you are a progressive loft and will make a success of it whatever you decide to go for -

PS I did try to buy your wee doo yesterday but the Mrs eyes borng in the back of my heed I had to let Wullie take her hame- worth that price any day of the week !!

Food for thought RAB, Cheers m8 :emoticon-0167-beer:

I'm adding your name to the list Derek (lofts setting the pace in the west)

i have been lucky enough to win my club old bird and combined average three years running with 12 or so national tickets in the past four years plus fed west sect combined ave last year so winning the club ob and com ave with 5 first club and 1 first sect with 18 national tickets and in the running again for the west sect ave in the fed againt 30000 thousand birds in the section i am over the moon highlights this year 1st club 2nd sect fed 8th sect national ypres and having such a good race in clermont national being 11th 35th 98th open but was very disapointed not to get one on the night so i guess this has been my best season so far and one of my very best years for learning your neaver to old to learn lol one thing i learned this year is when your winning out of turn watch your back you become a bassa in some peoples eyes the green eyed monster is after you sportsmen eh

Green eyed monsters ? My wife asked me last night after watching the highlights of the Singapore GP. Why are they booing the winner ? I said its because he wins so much ,it's the same in any sport , Just the same in pigeons I'm afraid if you win more than your share you are either at it ,or talked about behind your back . Well done Walter and well done to all .

Myself won a few quid. A couple of national tickets . And a good team left for next year .

Goal was to get to the two SNFC Inland Nationals and we done that so job done. Over the water next year! and try and get to as many SNFC races as possible.

Getting the loft right has been a big thing and we feel we have got that right now. Got more quality birds in depth than previously so all in all its been a step in the right direction. Another year of lessons learned (Maidstone holdover, mice control. natural yb's).

Looking forward to the winter!
