Am I right in thinking that a red cheq with black splashes is a cock - or does the black splashes apply to both sexes (and not sex related) I don't know the parentage

Yes it is a cock and yes some hens carry dark brown splashes. Off topic but I have 12 reds here and everyone a cock

If youngster is a black splash cock the mother was a red cheq hen IMO.

 

 

I had a mealy black splashed cock paired to a blue check hen

and they threw red black splash cocks
