  2. Reading Joe Murphy's Column in this weeks "The Racing Pigeon" page 21. He has an article stating "Good SNFC Birds". His remarks on "Jims Boy" raced by Messrs Turpie & McCord which requires one more Section prize to win its Gold Award and wishes them luck next year as I would expect any decent fancier to agree with.
  3. How things have changed over the past 50 years !! In 1965 their were 43 lofts in the club sending 400-450 birds weekly averaging 10 birds per loft and 20 youngsters were reared in 2 rounds. Nobody could afford to keep more and a 14ft loft was a big one. Now if you dont winter 60 birds upwards you are classed a small team fancier.. SO I will always be a small team fancier with no chance of competing against the MOB fanciers. Its no wonder the game is f££ked and we cannot get people to join. :emoticon-0179-headbang:
  4. NOPE, Cocks are out 1 day Hens the next weather permitting. We have had wonderful weather here the last couple of weeks and my birds are taking pleasure in raking the sky and I am getting the same watching them. No forced exercise here and the bath is always available to them. By the way the hen is back to normal and handling perfectly.
  5. I have a youngster with similar problems, Noticed 2 weeks ago she was hunched up as if ready to lay and losing weight fast to the extent of keel bone showing with no muscle and eyes dull yet droppings were firm and she was eating and drinking ok. I gave her 200mgm Flagyl in case it was crop canker then 2 days later 10% Lugols Iodine in a 90% water solution and syringed direct into her crop. She is making a slow recovery but I am confident she will make a full recovery. By the way she was and still is excercising 1 hour daily throughout this illness and treatment.
  6. You will have to send to America for this product as its unavailable at the moment John.
  7. Midland fed were still trying to go down the West and were decimated this side of the Shap. Last year going down the West my birds started returning from the North East rather than come through the Southern Uplands which I am sure would include Shap Fell. BUT ?? who says they come up over the Shap as I havent heard any of the guys saying batches of birds were coming through Gretna,Locherbie,Dumfries etc heading North.
  8. Aldi, insect zapper reduced to £6.99. I have 3 and they were £12.99 from B&Q. Killed thousands of moths & flies this year.
  9. Point taken Walter. Truth always hurts.
  10. AYE,, And the SNP's building the new Forth Road Bridge with Chinese steel !! They were not caring about Sottish workers when it all comes down to money. :emoticon-0179-headbang:
  11. Must have kissed and made up as Midland and Lanarkshire are having joint liberations next season. :egyptian:

    Pawns

Reading of the passing away of Roy Ryals brought back forgotten memories in 1982. I may have elaborated on this theme in the past and if so my appologies, However their may be new members on Basics and my utterings might elaborate on the missgivings of the vaccination programme we have had to endure. In 1982 I was reading the Daily Telegraph when an aquantance who was a small holder farmer asked if I had read the Farming Page and possible consequences that could develope. The article stated that it was the intention of the French Poultry industry which was heavily subsidised by the E.U. to flood the British market with their produce which in affect would cripple the British Poultry industry which was not subsidised in any way. The result being the MAFF introducing Paramyxovirus. It would appear Mr Ryals accepted with MAFF officials that Racing Pigeons would be declared Poultry and a vaccination programme was started. This in effect stopped the French in their tracks with their poultry not being accepted into Britain unless it had been vaccinated which in turn made it exempt to the British food chain as the vaccine remains active for 1 year. One of the reasons we cannot use La-Sotto ? [short life span] in the drinker. It would be quite easy to assume we the Pigeon Fancier are only Pawns on a chess board as our racers are Poultry to DEFRA when it suits, BUT NOT Poultry to DEFRA when the RSPB are involved. I never knew Roy Ryals was in consultation with MAFF back in 1982 although I had sent letters to the Racing Pigeon and British Homing World editors outlining what was happening to our sport and the RP published it immediately however Ernie Harbourn [editor of BHW] refused until brought under pressure by the late Jim Renwick, By then it was too late. It would have been enlightening if Mr Ryals had admitted his part in this but to my knowledge not even the Confederation was informed. My only wish as a fancier is to win the lottery and employ Mr Michael Thomas QC to investigate our predicament against raptors and DEFRA's stance. They cannot have it both ways.
  14. It's not difficult to make your own hopper if you have imagination and the tools.
  15. With less grub. :emoticon-0136-giggle:
  16. Phil, ATX Radiated heat works on the same principal as the sun's rays. You can feel the heat 10 feet away and not burn your hand on the panel. Likewise the Hygrometer can be set at whatever moisture percentage you wish the panel to control. I found ATX absolutely marvellous when my loft was situated under trees removing damp and in my loft I have Ionising fans to control incoming ventilation. No offence was taken or meant regarding DOH or DRIBBLE :emoticon-0136-giggle:
  17. Hopper feed Spillars Layer Pellets as long as your loft is vermin free. Control can still be manipulated by blowing a whistle when feeding hard mixtures morning and evening.
  18. DOH !!! Its radiated heat and wish you would read up on technology before dribbling. :egyptian:
  19. Somebody sent me a message regarding C.J.W. and I inadvertantly deleted it. Could they please get in touch again.
  20. Walter I do believe you are way off the mark regarding vaccinating for Paramyxo. I personally know fanciers who dont vaccinate just like you and many others know who they are who dont vaccinate BUT wont admit to it. A couple who come into that category who I know personally and had YBS every year started vaccinating and they are now YBS free. How many fanciers can honestly say they have vaccinated every year since 1982. Its like over use of antibiotics when you stop the problems arise. Some fanciers are their own worst enemy.
  21. Having seen YBS in other lofts I can honestly say I have never ever experienced it with my birds in my lofts. Maybe I have been lucky or perhaps my regime is correct. P.S. I dont believe its a virus, Sorry Derek.
  22. I am still Laughing :egyptian:
  23. The late Alf Baker from London was the top flier for years winning all before him and fed 60% New Zealand Maples and 40% Cinquentinha Maize. "See Old Pictorials for all his methods".
  24. Top Pic was taken last year and was mainly Begonias,Dhalias and Agapanthas. The others were taken in Sep this year and have been overgrown with the Dhalias to the extent of the removal of the fountain. I lost most of my Gladiolas to the frost over the winter and by luck some of the corms I had in a drawer in the shed survived. The Agapanthas are my pride and joy and have went from 2 heads 4 years ago multiplying every year to their present 44 heads on each plant. In spring the bed is covered with 500 White Daffodills and it is worth the effort as passers by are stopping to comment on it.
