As in every season for the last twenty years or so Iget stray racers from Ayrshire and other Feds in central Scotland I usually put them in a basket and drive them up to Abington or sometimes to the Douglas turn off on the M74.Hopefully most of them get home.I usually do this without any communication with the pigeon's owner.Sometimes however I am in contact with the fancier and mostly he is delighted to get his doo back.My problem is that now and again I get the distinct impression that some fanciers would rather not know and I feel that I am liberating a pigeon to a decidedly uncertain future and this annoys me.

Your perception is exactly the same as the impression which many members of the public have of pigeon fanciers. I picked up a pigeon from a lady who was concerned that the owner might kill it for being too slow. Obviously I reassured her.

On a personal note I am always pleased when any of mine return.

Always delighted to see a doo home no matter how long after a race, they will always get another chance. Also always grateful to anyone that helps, whether reporting, looking after, collecting etc. I collected a hen of the ferry from Coll a couple of weeks ago. Was racing to near Newcastle I thin from south coast. The owner, Keith Tilbury, drove all the way up to collect her and had a weekend in Oban. Im sure most are the same Walter and appreciate your help.

Havent had many reported over the last few years, but I would always try to retreive them as soon as possible , and always glad to see latecomers return home.

I have a friend who occasionaly brings in pigeons collected from the solway area sometimes 5 or six at a time mostly local Ayrshire birds and like you Walter I always endevour to get them back to their owners

most are really greatfull others not so.

I myself have done the same in many occasions over the years and knowing that at least I helped these birds a little on their way to get home which I feel happy doing. I know what your saying as regards to some of the pigeons that make it home Walter and how they are treated on their return but as long as you are doing your bit and giving a helping hand to get them on their way is all you can do. So just keep up the good work and hopefully most of the birds are welcomed back to their lofts and treated accordingly :animatedpigeons:

Over the years I've been picking up Bird's from all over dumfrieshire,Gretna and Cumbria, last year alone I picked up and returned over 200 young birds to ayrshire, any Lanarkshire birds I have picked up along with them are released at Strathclyde park,97 per cent of the ayrshire boys are more than glad to get their birds home and are up right away when you phone them, you will a ways get the odd one or two that don't want their birds back walter and won't come for them alow IT may only be a 5 min drive for them, the thing is Walter we don't really do it for the fancier its for the birds.and I take my hat of to you sir long may you continue doing it.
