Id say it takes a more skilled fancier to win an old bird race. However a young bird race I feel is a more open playing field pros and novice, have a chance. But a win is a win to me, whether old or young. But that's my opinion

In my opinion a lot of it comes down to the numbers game someone putting away 40 odd a week to the next flier maybe 10 ,ask the same members to nominate their birds as in a 2 or 3 bird club then i am about sure the results would differ ,but on saying that a win is a win equaly important young or old birds .

The way I look at it is when racing old birds your racing against fanciers established teams. The old bird teams are the pick of the lets say last 2-6 years of breeding/selection, you could say their best.

Ask yourselves this: Is it best to buy in pigeons based on young bird results or old bird results? I'd go for the later every time.

It's difficult to win any race these days,my mate won £6,000 in one youngbird race last season,I don't think he would swop that for a win with the old birds.

I'm of two minds on this. I don't think you can judge a YB's future career as an OB on its performance in YB racing.

Several years ago there was a guy who specialised in SNFC YB National and regularly took top 3 or 4 positions in it. So YB racing is no longer the level playing field for the Novice that it once was.

A win is still a win.

a win is a win and both equal or their abouts. to sugest 1 old bird win is equal to 2 yb wins is wrong for me. hears a choice 1st club 1st fed 90 miles old birds or 1st club 1st fed open yb,s 216 miles.which bird would you pick. to me it is a know brainer.

Dont bother too much about yb racing i will stick rubber rings on my yb's next week sometime and those same rubbers will stay on until the end of the season unless i fancy a wee crack at the yb duplication race but i will send them as trainers every week in the club

A would still pick the Old bird win. About 1995 or thereabouts, we had a young Red Pd Ck that won 3 races and almost single handedly won the Yb average. First race as an old bird it went down like a stone and not another fancier will remember that doo. Top the Fed (Lanarkshire) in the Old bird racing and everyone will take note of it and remember it too. My experience also tells me the Old bird winner is most likely to breed you something handy too, but not the Yb winner.

I would take the old bird result........................... It would've beaten a stronger field.

Same here geo I find a good or reasonable old bird will show signs

Of ability as a young bird, or an out and out tube.

Young bird wins can be more about "Location" think this applies in our club for sure.

Happens in our fed especially with the youngsters being raced at short distances . They call it the bus stop route the way the doos come

John If you're saying the Red cock was never seen again you must suspect an accident, He obviously was a racer, I had a similar experience in the '80's, again a Red youngster, won 3 times in a row and in the top 10 of Fed. results, was working about 20mls. from home and took the youngsters with me several times a week, Checking the loft on return the Red cock was missing, I never saw him again and didn't expect to, but I don't think he got lost emoticon-0127-lipssealed.gif

My point was not what happened to the Rd Pd Ck, it was the fact no one remembers these doos, but top our fed in the Ob program and everyone takes notice. The value in winning an Ob race in Lanarkshire far outweighs the Yb wins. Mind these are JMO!!

I've no doubt you're right John, I always thought when I was racing that I should have been in partnership, Young bird racing was always my big interest as I found old bird racing a bit of a bore emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

No one in my opinion remembers a pigeon that topped the fed once, apart from the owner . A pigeon that tops it numerous times are the ones that are remembered. The best pigeon I've ever raced against in my time was Champion Mach 1 5x1st federation as a young bird, raced by Tizzard, Bigwood and O Cunneff.

TBH, am finding both ob's and yb's a bore this last 2 years, emoticon-0138-thinking.gif However am sure the pendulum of joy will swing back both our ways when our turn comes round again.egyptian.gifegyptian.gif

Bigwood was a wizard with young birds.

I had his dvd at one time, don't know where it ended up :emoticon-0179-headbang:

A win is a win and 40 or 10 birds can't do it only one bird wins each race in my club anyway.
