I remember reading about the likes of ‘Trail’s Spark’, ‘Nancy’, ‘Rowena’ , ‘Westbound’ as well as looking through the pedigree of John Ellis’ ‘Nantes Hen’ and thinking one day I’d like to have a bash at this race.

It’s amazing looking at the fanciers and pigeons who fly a minimum of 600 miles from the French races; the ground pigeons in the calibre of; ‘5 O’clock Rock’,’ Donnan’, ‘Heather’s Dream’ and ‘Marlene’s Girl’ would have covered flying alone is staggering.

Birds in this class possess arguably the most phenomenal instinct in all of nature and are as close to the fulfilment of athletic potential in an animal that you’re likely to come across.

This season I hope to give the Tours race a go and it will be a first attempt at trying to clock from a distance in excess of 600 miles.

What experiences have you had competing from this kind of distance?

How were your birds prepared? How were your candidates chosen?

Will the SNFC longest race ever rise again? Can it be made more attractive or will it steadily dwindle into nothingness ?

Aye Lewis, Niort 680 miles and its not the distance or race point where the problem begins its the fact the SNFC is transported by middle England organisations. Please bear with me and I will give in my opinion half the problem. 1980 the birds were taken by Cheshire fed to Nantes and liberated all to-gether, A hard race ensued with a bird dropping into a Cheshire loft at 20.00 with my candidate following it into his loft, The guy won his Combine and kept mine a prisoner for 2 days before letting it continue his merry way. If memory serves me the winner into Scotland was timed about 08.00. It is obvious they have to fly single the last part of the journey. This year I believe we are being transported by the Midland National whose Southern border is Cheltenham. 300 mile single up could be the reality if your candidate is in the wrong batch plus they will be being pulled along by birds racing 300 miles. In my opinion we should be going ourselves and if its £15 per bird then so be it.

Ive not been going to the longest race for that long but I wouldnt miss it now, if I can help it.I think I was 5th sect, 30th open in my second attempt at it.This race is usually a good race but it is a different type of bird that does well in it.I timed 3 of my 4 entries a couple of years ago on the result, 628 miles..Also, 2 out of 2 in result another year. I also was 11th Open from Tours 628 miles when the pigeon was away for its second race that year, the 1st race being Gretna, 77 miles. ps.She also was my pooler ;):001:^_^ The SNFC longest race has ALWAYS to stay in the race calendar, as it is the ultimate test for our pigeons.

Sitting up where you are Lewis, you'll need a big piece and a flask! And maybe a couple of days off work just incase it's a hard one.

Wee Jocky Harrison always used to try and give his Nantes doos the 1st Sartilly or Avranches as a warm up before going, said they didnt need much training after that.

Looking at the birdage for the 2 nats longest race, maybe this is the ideal occassion to put the differences aside and go together?

i must agree with you peter and in mop it should be the gold cup race to

and many pigeons do you think you would get for that race

i dont think the pigeon fancier,s would agree to that one, it is hard enough getting them from a 550 miler and use are wanting more

The Objects of The Scottish National Flying Club used to read " To promote Long Distance Racing into Scotland " Whoever had that removed should hang their head in shame.

We send Y/B to 300 miles yet some want an old bird national from that distance. POPPYCOCK.

yip and some would want them up in a small convoy!! 300 mile on their own??? better hope they get in a batch at the start or they will be doing it all themselves???

I think ye kind of need a doo tae fly itself cos there aint many who can do that distance in a one go and thats why they are ready to go down with others? I have a hen that was at alencon last year and dropped into a resteraunt in kirby stephen on the night!!!! Thw same resteraunt that she did the year before????Arghhh
