Supermarket Products

Was reading my BHW and could not ignore the many adverts, selling pigeon products at inflated prices, and I began to reflect on some of the products I have used this year, which were bought from the local supermarket.

 

Here are some;

 

 

Garlic bulbs

Cider vinegar

Natural probiotic yoghurt

Lemon juice

 

what other products have you purchased for your birds from your local supermarket, for a small cost?

I like giving the pigeons egg shells.

 

Save them whenever I'm making french toast or anything egg based

 

Give them a wash then put under the grill til they are brittle and dry.Crush them up then watch yer doos go at them

When I was working the lasses in the canteen saved them for me,as you say the birds loved them..

saving money is great but did you win any races using those supermarket items and if you had to choose 1 out of the 4 what would it be

The 4 products I have mentioned are given to aid/maintain good health, and not as performance enhancing products.

I was one of those fanciers who in the past use to spend good money on purchasing some of the many products on offer, and failed to see the benefit, how ever I am not claiming using the products from the supermarket have made my birds winners, but in my opinion aided there good health, I did win this year,(not enough) and also scored from the only SNFC Chanel race I entered from Clermont, 64th Open, so these cheap products in my opinion, did not do my birds any harm. All I am saying is, are we as fanciers constantly being fooled into purchasing "winning potions"? JMO

 

It is a hard choice to select 1 from the 4 mentioned, but to attempt to answer your question, I would say the garlic bulb.

My neighbour keeps hens so I get her to keep the shells for me.She thinks I'm mental mind you

To be honest Sapper its probably a waste of time,but for all the good it does it will certainly do no harm

Multi vitamins for babies... And some lettuce. And also the ones mentiones about garlic, lemon juice, cider vinegar

How do you use the lemon juice?

nasal decongestant ASDA under £2 not as harsh as nazalene easier on your pocket.

Chop 3 lemons and 1 garlic bulb put them in a pan of water and boil then simmer for 20 minutes, let cool naturaly over nite add a gallon of cool water then give the birds it in the morning.

 

Cabbage juice from the pan and top up with more water to make a gallon.

Another good one is toasted soya beans grinded up to a powder.Moisten yer feed with some oil and sprinkle some on it.

I must admit I give my birds various things out of a bottle but I dont consider that I am being fooled into buying them,I just feel that by giving the birds the best I can afford I am looking after them the best I can. Weather or not they would perform the same if I stopped giving them these things I dont know but I am quite happy looking after them the way I do.Here is a list of what I use,

Adherb from Carrs.

Organic Cyder Vinegar.

Gemthepax from Gem.

Glucose and Vitamins from Versele LAga.

I also use Versele Laga corn.

You could use any suitable for pigeons.Linseed oil and peanut oil will do no harm in moderation.All depends what time of year it is and what yer doing with the doos

Well I'd have to say Brian, I've had pigeons for 60yrs. and I've never given them any of those products from any source and cannot imagine why I ever would, I think people get dragged into thinking there is a magic formula for winning, It's all in the genes, they've either got it or they haven't, I don't think you can feed it to them

Like every thing else, a lot of the products on sale from pigeon potions to medications are designed to fleece the fancier of his hard earned cash and do no good whatsoever IMO most can be obtained from other sources at a fraction of the cost.

we use cod-liver-oil for this about once a month

Citric acid instead of cider vinegar

 

You only need about a one eigth to a quarter of a teaspoon to 2 litres of water - to acidify the gut

 

Available from Ethnic supermarkets, home brew shops and eBay (I know Morrison's in Huddersfield sell it - but not Morrison's where I live - under the'East End' brand)

 

200g is about £1.50 and would last a year or two (the equivalent price of a bottle of organic cider vinegar, which would not last a season!)
