OLDYELLOW Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 cleaning is more for our needs not the birds , but if you've ever had red mites then keeping clean is a must to stop them infesting your loft nesting time is when these spread so better to be proactive as birds don't rest in a loft with red mites
Roland Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 Many things like Red Mite etc. are easily and quickly got shot of.... and better still so easy to avoid. Place a few beer mats soaked in cresote for instance.Chinese chalk, just draw a line around the bowl, or round the beer mats. Like deep litter, it has very much beneficial benefits. Many a good fancier takes the old droppings and place into any new loft / compartment. Like Lce, these are actually GOOD for the birds! Tis the fancier that moans when basketing others birds ... Be like the Belgium - whom we take note of when it suits, and disregards when it doesn't. They allow the lice to keep the feathers and plummage in tip top condition AND wear smocks etc. Every thing in nature has a purpose. We go angainst it with selfish whims.... at our perils. Lets ask ourselves a simple question if a important race / National or what ever depending on being just outside the top bracket, like in not in first 10 - 20 and being first by allowing nature to have it's way the most likely answer is 'Do as nature'.... but this seems forgotton when the 'Name' is selling products that are suppose to enhance our birds. Remember a fancier chuntering when he basket one of mine with lice. Yes I dominated the race.... and I told him to buy some lice of me next time lol. Mind that was a while back and I do reat a prevention. But then I am in all honesty being hypocritical and pleasing others fads. Now if the birds are stamping at night one may say 'They need their rest' etc. Never see a fit wild bird with out a glistening shine, in prime condition and 'lice'.

Guest peter4pm Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 Sometimes i think we are to clean with our lofts hence why we end up with so much disease as the birds dont get a chance to build up any defence because we are doing our OCD method..so the birds think this is the norm ...so when you leave it to get a little more dirtier than usual you have trouble on your hands...i now dont clean under my grills on the floor for up to 4 months at a time ..i just let the crap build up....just my thoughts

Guest IB Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 I keep the nest box clean because the majority of my sitting birds go out of their way to keep it clear of droppings - when they come off the nest, cock or hen, they each go to their own favourite place in the loft, usually the bar perches in the aviary, to dump it, never inside the box. Youngsters in the nest bowl also go out of their way to keep their bowl clear of droppings - they back up to the rim and dump it over the side, and I clear those droppings off the box floor every day. What I'm left with in the bowl is a layer of bits of feather sheath on the nest felt, and I dump that and the old nesting material. I dust the nest felt with stalosan before giving it back to the parents for their next round, to stimulate 'building' etc. I've had some birds build using flat dried droppings.

THE FIFER Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 I like if possible to have spare bowls and put them in after youngsters are moved, not always but thats what i like to do,
Roland Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 I like the House bricks at right angles. These do make great nesting. Easy to keep clean and treat. Though this year I will have nest bowls covered in three layers of paper. These bowls will be treated before being wrapped. Lime power is great too, and Ecoli never a problem regardless of the contradictionary thoughts. - Good to have a sprinkling in water and stirred and left over night as this has a very relaxing and soothing effect. These nest bowls can be changed over very easily and quickly of course. Then cleansd and covered again. I spray with Vykrom or Idonene etc. after I scrub them clean. I ought to buy a second hand dishwasher really for this like so many do - Joyce hates me using her's lol Dried and warm I place the Lime - Garden lime - in and wrapped with the newpaper. I find Page Three is very good for sitting cock birds.
greenlands Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 Mine are cleaned out every time I go in the loft,I think it keeps the young birds tame, nest pans cleaned when the young birds are removed.
