Les Kilshaw, one of the greatest, fed tick beans on the hopper for years in and out . Dr Rigg , another ace, fed tic beans and sometimes would germinate them to give them the green shoots of the bean, But Dr Rigg always was a great believer in dogtooth maize at the right time. Another good flyer who was a scribe for the BHW in the U.N.Combine area, swore by beans, His name was Ken Everit if I rermember right. So it's BEAN going on for years! ugh! ;D ;)

i think beans hold 20-25% protein and 45-50% carbs

most say a balance should be 15% protein the rest carbs so a mix heavy on beans with barley, wheat and maize fed a little a day is not far off the 15% as most of these grains hold 6-8% protein

well done tony

could i ask from how far out from the race tou added the carbs and fats, what was the velocity?

One of the top National Flyers near here feeds both barley and tic beans from the hopper. This guy is very unusual because he flies natural. I think he uses Old Hand's pin head oatmeal mix as a tidbit. His lofts are always totally clean.

About the only thing he does that is not against modern thinking are his ideas on training. His birds are in the basket every day and they will go South one day and East the next.

Personally, I would not touch a bean with a barge pole. And I would not dream of feeding peas after the young birds are 5 weeks old.

I will give the moulting birds a low level of peas but I certainly would not give them any significant quantity.
