  1. Hope you are contacted again and some minds are put to rest.
  2. Had this earlier this year. Treated for canker, but the bird didn't recover. I too, thought something had lodged in its throat.

  11. Don't know what happened in the past, but I think it is time to forgive and forget. The fancy needs unity, so in Scotland there should only be 1 National. As a starting point both Nationals should agree to joint convoy, but with separate results, it makes sense, increased birdage and less requirement for English organisations to convoy our birds. The main concern for the English race controller is his birds which are in the majority, so at times this works against our birds, but we are powerless. At least with all Scottish birds going together the joint controllers have similar concerns. A greater degree of flexibility is also required. I note that the SNRPC change their arrangements to suit the weather on occasions whereas the SNFC seem to have more holdovers, which apart from being expensive are not the best for the birds.
  12. Nearly half way. If your weather is like ours, they are doing well coming through it.
  13. Whitty told me it was just after the war. (Boer War) :emoticon-0140-rofl:
  14. Wood pigeons don't fly the same as racers. They spend their time in the trees, flying to and from the trees and on the ground. They are probably not as attractive a prospect for the peregrines, sparrowhawks are maybe a bit small, so goshawks would be their problem.
  15. Same here Stuart. I don't race YB's and only give them a few tosses. Yearlings out to 200 miles. Difference for me is that I still seem to be losing too many. That will be down to my inexperience, not knowing the quality of my birds due to starting up, etc, etc. I am slowly finding out what birds to breed from, perhaps too slowly. I have also been locking them up, but am unsure of the merits of this. I think they could do with the occasional outing during the close season.
  16. Ypres, Reims, Arras and Bourges. All Eastern France, except the Belgian one. Two shorter races for beginners around 400 miles, the 500 miler and the long one. Gold Cup from Bourges, the pinnacle. Ypres or Arras for duplication.
  17. Difficult question George. Like you, I am new to the sport, but I would say that, given the fresh outlook I have, the sport needs totally re-vamped and I very much doubt it will ever happen. Too many fanciers are happy to trundle along the way it has always been. I think that the sport should be organised under the umbrella of the Confederation. They should administer the sport and control all racing. Ring registration should be organised by the existing Unions. The National Clubs, of which there should only be 4, organise National racing into their areas and these should be from overseas only. Combines or Amalgamations should organise middle distance racing into their own areas and these should be inland races. Federations should organise the sprint racing which could be such that they race midweek as well as at weekends. More co-operation is required between individual organisations and fanciers and this continual separation attitude must go. Now that would be Utopia. In the short term, if less distance races were available, you would think that more pigeons would be sent to them rather than teams being split to cover all the distance races. I do believe though that some fanciers are successful enough to re-send pigeons that have completed distance races and these birds go more than once a season.
  18. Zoonooses are illnesses that are able to be transferred from one species to another. For instance, dogs that have roundworm are able to pass them to humans. Toxicara canis in dogs becomes toxicariasis in humans. The spellings may not be completely correct, but the information is correct. The chances of cross-infection vary from species to species and condition to condition, but it is known that such examples exist.
  19. They are able to eat chicken crumbs from birth, but they do have zoonooses with pigeons, so better to give to the chicken man than risk cross infection.
  20. Be very careful with your landing when you do your somersaults Walter, don't want you to put your back out.
  21. Everyone seems to be breeding earlier, so instead of messing with darkness, etc, train them up and have any age races around the time the feds are going with the national. Given some thought, with the reduction in numbers as the season progresses, rather than running transporters half full, joint convoying frees up transporters for shorter any age races.
  22. Think there are 2 Friday liberations and 2 Saturday liberations from Thurso. Many thanks to Gordon Willox who is arranging for 1 of my birds lost last week to be liberated from Brechin after your birds are gone.
  23. Not noticed it yet this year, but had problems with it last year.
  24. Barcelona One Loft Sale?
  25. Well done to all that timed.
