superb performance....as Jade states there are fanciers who would deny birds such as this hen the chance to shine......
-

Methilhaven Maidstone Open
JOHNSEE replied to WHITTY's topic in Fife Federation Notice and Club Results
made a difficult race look like a short training toss, excellent flying.... -
sounds a little harsh Gareth,I am sure there are members in your own area who may not send unless conditions favor the type of bird their sending....I believe we have a lot learn from horse trainers, how often have you heard of horses being withdrawn at the 3 day declaration stage of a big race because conditions did not suit the horse.....speaking about horse trainers, what about Ian Benstead (horse trainer)also pigeon fancier who did not hesitate in sending a bird to its first race at 600 miles and often timed them in.You say your sending approx 10 birds, can I ask you how many off the ten were selected some time ago and have been set for this race..

F..k you Jack is the feeling I get when reading some of these posts,I believe that S.N.F.C. should promote races from all distances, not all members keep or are interested in short races or even middle distance races they are only interested in longer distance racing and indeed vice versa is it not up to each member to decide whether to enter birds in any race they choose to and the best way is to have a selection of distances as at present, one is not forced to enter any race, someone has quoted that the S.N.F.C. states that it is to promote long distance racing into Scotland......how many members send birds to the longest race in the S.N.F.C. program.....many years ago (IT MAY STILL BE THE SAME)on your Rennes entry form you had to name the race point that was to be flown for the blue riband,I ask you how many members put Nantes which was the furthest race on the program not very many south of fife.....cater for all pigeon faciers short/middle/long races we need one and other......good luck to all.

This story makes interesting reading,as in a previous post there were different views regarding birds that fail to return home.....no one can be really sure what happens to birds that fail to home....but birds that work out where things went wrong and worked away untill they reached home no matter how long learn something, that something stands them in good stead for the rest of their racing life or untill something happens that you never find out they just fail to return,........
-
Delboy.....sometime I wonder if comments are a windup, but your comment regarding the birds you sent to a National race.....very bad taste.
-
very good performance from a bird who seems to keep going when others fall by the wayside, she has earned her perch for the year,or have you more planned for her.....?
-
your thoughts on what went wrong with your birds John, were they experienced birds ? would like to hear your views....thanks...JBC/..

Why Didnt They Make It ?
JOHNSEE replied to andy Burgess's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
maybe in your federation you could only muster 1500 birds at the last race, would that be inland or channel race,my recollection was 50 years ago fanciers had to dispose of old birds because they did not have enough room at the end of the season, members selected what they felt was their best o/birds culled the remainder, they would not sell on birds they would not keep their self,What I do recall was loses started increasing when we moved from rail travel onto trasporter, ther were many theorys as to why but no one was able to say for sure, one thing for sure was the birds rested better by rail,I still believe to many youngsters are being bred from so called stock birds that have not bred anything, and in turn from their offspring that has not won anything, one thing I would look to is the ammount of comunication devices satelite dishes, telephone masts etc. P/P you say 6000 at the first race 1500 at the final race then you assume there were no birds left in the members lofts,50 years ago members only sent a few of their birds to the final race. -
hope you isolated the bird, you dont know where its been...or what birds it has been mixing with....

Why Didnt They Make It ?
JOHNSEE replied to andy Burgess's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
I cant remember a race where no birds made it home,In 1969 my father and I timed the only 2 birds in the club on the day from christchurch 404 miles, when we timed our birds there was around a couple of hours of daylight left a fancier next door to us felt that these two birds were lost, but were lucky to be heading the right way....who knows maybe he was right, many birds failed to return to their lofts that week-end and more to the point never ever reached home why we never found out, pigeon racing has and will continue to be full of ups and downs, disapointments are often and replacing these birds Andy will be difficult, but stick to it,there is still a lot of pleasure.....all the best. -
Why Didnt They Make It ?
JOHNSEE replied to andy Burgess's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
one thing for sure your bird did not get flown out or take untill monday night to cover 150 miles, see what I mean, are you any closer to discovering what happened to your bird,is it possible that they clashed with birds flying south and on discovering the error tried to make its way back north (I do believe there was liberations of north road flyers as far north as perth on sat.)any other birds reported preferably south of you racepoint...? -
that means he will have been sitting 16 days at day of basketing bearing in mind they dont start to incububate untill the second egg which will be 5th so he will be sent sitting 14 day eggs, the thing that I would concerned about is should the race be another head wind after a 400 mile mile /10.5 hrs.............good luck

depends how you wish to view it how far is Newcastle from the racepoint,is it on the line of flight when did your bird arrive at the fanciers loft, like I mention in an earlier post there are many thing that could have happened and you will be no nearer finding out....cheers -

JOHNSEE replied to andy Burgess's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
Andy....when I kept birds years ago there was nobody that I knew was more critical of their own birds than I was, over a period of time almost every bird was a first prize winner in a club sending between 300/400 birds.but we still had losses and it was very hard to understand what went wrong, indeed one never finds out why winners fail to return home but fail they do,as long as you were happy with their condition and confident that they could compete you have played your part, you wont find the answer because no one has it....move on keep trying, the only part of your post I would look at was the fact they were in a race of 200 miles the week before. soldier on and good luck.....p.s. if your serious I have a few canaries I am trying get rid off...lol -
