  1. Any idea the number of times these super flyers topped their section ?
  2. Do any fanciers have any preference as to rearing young birds ? do single reared y/birds have a better start or is it best with two in the nest, any good winners been single reared, thoughts appreciated....thanks...JBC/..
  3. Very very, interesting article......present day fanciers can learn a lot from reading this....JBC/.
  4. Not sure if what you say is aimed at me,at no time have I said what fanciers should or should not do with their birds, all I have pointed out was the difference stated by you in your posts, now you have added a time limit of three years before you would dispose of bird that has not scored at least club level thats all Iam pointing out......
  5. I agree the only way is the basket,I was only pointing out the difference in what you stated in your posts....... P.S. It was nice to see your photograhp in the B.H.W.the other week after a very successful season, hope it continues in 2014....JBC/..
  6. Walter I would be the first to say after returning to the sport after 20 years I have a lot of catching up to do so my opinions are based on when racing in the 60s/70s it is just what you said in a previous post that you have plenty birds in your loft with strong backs but were crap......now you say they either go down or you put them down then if you do how come you still have them in your loft ?......
  7. Sorry this was addressed to a comment made by Walter, before I say a bird is crap I must have something to base that on,and I certainly would not keep any bird that I had that opinion of.........
  8. Walter you say you have plenty pigeons that have good backs, but are crap,to say that you must be basing it on something, also if they are crap why have you not disposed of them?
  9. see previos posts I stood to be corrected,(memory not what it was)....cheers JBC/..
  10. Some good posts on this topic, brings back some happy memories (memory aint what it used to be)perhaps with the interest shown with enough members, birds from Scotland could enter through the B.I.C.C. or what ever club goes there,my personal view would be a step to far to call it a race....good luck to any birds members may send....JBC/.. ( 30 bob each, think that was about the going rate at that time.....how things have changed)
  11. Yes as it was way back in the seventies a challange....not for you its not but for the birds...a step too far, wish your birds well but Im afraid you would kiss them good-bye......JBC/..
  12. sorry Istand to be corrected I did not believe it was in race time.....my apologies....JBC/..
  13. your correct thats what we keep them for.....but the distance involved turns it from a race into a task beyond the limits of pigeon racing....remember races close at velocities below 400 y.m.m 1000 miles into this country is not possible in the alloted time,On the day birds are liberated they will fly their hearts out to get home on the day before nightfall, after racing all day they may not and probly not reached the english channel the next day, they still have 500/600 miles to go thats where they start to give, every hour, every mile, more start falling by the wayside, some may eventualy reach home but by that time their not racing pigeons their wrecks......dont get me wrong they are game birds but it would no longer be a race......JBC/.
  14. send pigeons to that distance would play into the hands of those wishing to see pigeon racing banned,it has been tried but was unsucessful as a race, just look at the entry to the longest race with the S.N.F.C. a club that stands for long distance races.....the total number of birds sent is pityful to say the least.....I think thats why Jock Ellis called his red pied cock "ENDURANCE"...JBC/..
  15. think you are right,Dave Smith from Dunning in Perthshire was I think president and Jim Bruce was secretary, there were a few birds that flew Palomos....I think Bert Stewart from Carnoustie won it one year with "Bettys Delight" olso remember the one and only Jock Ellis from wellbank who was one of the first to time in a bird called "Endurance" this bird was later purchased by Jim Biss, and was later purchased back by Jock Ellis at auction.....cant remember why the I000 club folded my father and I sent one bird but that was the last we saw of him.......JBC/. In these days Jock Ellis even joined the B.I.C.C. so he could send a young bird to Rennes 586 miles he got it within a week...Jock was always and still is a very hard task master.

Owen, you never bred from either of these birds so we will never know if their offspring could have been any good, point of interest however is that even with your system you had rejects. As I stated earlier eyesign is only part of the make-up of a good pigeon and by all means not the only thing that one should judge a pigeon on and I would urge fanciers to remember that,I would again say look at the pictures on the front pages of the B.H.W. the pages where various organisations are showing their winners, winners from all distances you wont find a weakness in any of their eyes, but by any means it is not a shortcut but it is important in breeding that elusive champion.......Owen really enjoyed the chat...Happy New-Year to you and all your family.

Owen you have travelled off thread, the question was for members thoughts regarding eyesign in pigeons,as I stated in an earlier reply eyesign is only part of the make up of good pigeons, you are old enough to remember the sixties, well you will remember that the majority of pigeons around then had wishy washy eyesign in short the sign was very weak with the odd one or two who had outstanding eyesign, members then did not understand how to read the sign weather it would be a racer or breeder, but since then many many fanciers have improved their knowledge and hence their performances in both racing and breeding, and as a result overall pigeon performances have improved.I do agree with you however that some fanciers breed from anything that lays an egg,I wrote that in an earlier post regarding breeding extra to make up for expectant losses, bred from birds that earned no right to a perch in the loft let alone being bred from....but this is for another thread......p.s. enjoyed the chat....JBC/.

Owen, some of what you say may be true, but there again not all, lets start with plenty short cuts to selecting pigeons the only reliable one being racing form.....There are loads of super racing pigeons that could not breed winners and again there are birds that could not fly over the nearest dyke turn out winners in almost every nest....so no short cut there! Now you say paper pedigrees for birds bred from prisoner stock,I am sure the likes of Louella,Steve Wright, and all those fanciers who purchase birds from pigeon studs or indeed fanciers who keep and breed from prisoner stock birds would not agree with your views......my views on eyesign is that it is part of the make-up of racing pigeons, and a weak eyesign is like any other weakness in a birds make up.....take a look at the winners on the front pages of the B.H.W. every week some super birds and if they have a weakness it is certainly not their eyesign.....wish all maembers of P.B. a good breeding season......JBC/..
  21. This was discused on a post on Pigeon Chat only last week, members claimed they recieved their rings on the 4th. Dec.
  22. Hi,In a perfect world this problem with the missuse of certain substances would not arise, but this is not a perfect world.I have only returned to this hobby after a break of 20 years, christ I did not believe that the problem with b.o.p. untill I experienced it over and over with my own small team,if any substance is to be banned then every fancier must be informed, they would then have to sign a decleration stating their birds were clear of such substances along with their entry sheet for a race, after the race the top number of birds would have to be tested, any bird found with banned substance in its blood the fancier to be banned for life........Thats only the start, the member in question would have a right of appeal and this is where it gets difficult the fancier would only have to insist that the bird in question must have been contaminated after being in a basket over a period of time with other birds and consumed something that perhaps another bird had brought up....(just like y/birds not sick when you sent it to a race yet suffering when they arrive home)or perhaps stopped for a drink on the way home....it would be to costly and too difficult to prove,I dont believe that it is widespread but there again I did not believe that b.o.p. was widespread,on that note I believe most fanciers have given up fighting the B.O.P.and now keep their birds in the the loft all winter.....best regards....JBC/..
  23. All I ask is please advise me and any other interested fanciers where can I view the complete list of banned substances........"one who hides behind insults normaly has something to hide" if you do not know where I can view this list please say so.....thank you....JBC/..
  24. Your attempt to tell me what is a banned substance is pathetic to say the least.......tell me please, where did you find this list or do you just make this up as you go along ? Please enlighten me where to find this complete list of banned substances....and by the way I have to take an asprin (disolved)each day for C.H.D. should I be banned ?
  25. Iteresting but what a lot of P..h Iam of the opinion if any fancier wants to give their bird any substance that he feels can make it fly faster then he is free to do so,there is already so much different items you can buy,how many check to see what they contain, who knows what is a banned substance and what is not banned,as for getting fanciers to sign agreeing that if found guilty.....found guilty by who ? and on what evidence,I have read that even where tests are sent for analysis the results differ from one to the other..........you will never beat well bred, well reard, well trained, healthy birds, fed on sound seed.......JBC/.
