Jim hannah Posted October 19, 2016 Report Posted October 19, 2016 (edited) If you do a search for 100 years of Racing Pigeons into Ayrshire you will find some useful information there. I think chapter 7 is the relevant passage. The text was written and compiled by Bobby Kennedy who was friendly with Henry and , indeed I think they worked in the same factory in Irvine. The record into Ayrshire was established by "Faith which was owned by WG Davidson.Henry's timed on 3 occasions 3rd and 23rd are the only 2 positions mentioned but his 3rd which was with Lionheart was not even close to the record set by Faith. The record was then beaten by Alan Raeside's Conqueror which took just over 2 days for the journey. Note when I say record I only speak about into Ayrshire. I don't know how to paste a link from the iPad or I would have done so.If I remember when Conquerer won this race that weekend those birds caught the tailend of a hurricane which came up from the med. and pushed he birds well up intothe Midlands further proof of this would be to look at the results of the other UK races that same weekend if possible. I'm sure that its physically impossible for a pigeon to do this mileage without a strong tailwind with that flying time. Edited October 19, 2016 by Jim hannah

You're older than me Jim so probably can recall the event much more clearly.Of course I agree any record breaking performance will always be wind assisted. It's a matter of having a pigeon at the event, in form when the conditions suit your location.
We man Posted October 19, 2016 Report Posted October 19, 2016 Would if I could get my photo to load! Tilt your head a bit and it will be ok!What a cracker of a bird.
Blue Chequer Pied Posted October 19, 2016 Report Posted October 19, 2016 Rotated. Thanks Andy. I was invited to judge the Wick club show earlier this year. When I was in the clubhouse I was blown away with the history that is hanging on the walls. If most fanciers were to see the route these guys have to fly they would faint. The terrain is not for the faint hearted (it is hard enough driving up there). I think any bird that flies into Wick from the South coast is special let alone from Palamos. Ultimate respect for the guys in the far North. Paul.
Valiant Fifer Posted October 19, 2016 Report Posted October 19, 2016 Yes would deffo be hard place to fly into.
Blue Chequer Pied Posted October 19, 2016 Report Posted October 19, 2016 Another great pigeon raced by one the very best fanciers I have ever met if not the best and one of the nicest men you could ever hope to meet. What Callum has done for pigeon racing in the North is immeasurable and he has set standards most could only dream of. Andy could you do your stuff again please 🖒
Kyleakin Lofts Posted October 19, 2016 Report Posted October 19, 2016 Done. I know how difficult it is to fly the 200 miles from Thurso down into Ayrshire, so I do appreciate the difficulty these fanciers face EVERY week racing.
Kyleakin Lofts Posted October 19, 2016 Report Posted October 19, 2016 I have spoken with Michael Miller, Callum's son, and he has been so helpful to us. Not only do they fly into difficult terrain, but they are so dedicated to the fancy in general they do their very best. One friend had a pigeon chased by peregrines from one of our races. It ended up in Wick. They organised to transport it to Livingston, so he could collect it.

Roland Posted October 27, 2016 Report Posted October 27, 2016 Been in touch, regards the 'Distance Race' in Canada.Dave Rogers helped very much with support and fund - raisers etc. His reply is as below: Re: Pickle LakeSent: Fri Oct 21, 2016 2:11 pm From: david rodgers To: Roly Hi Roly. it was easy to run but just couldn't get the support from the flyers to fly it. 75 percent or more just want the short to middle distance races. as they don't like the long races. its just the changing times, hope your well and you take care now.Etc. etc. I believe this is certainly the case in England, but possibly not so in Scotland. Wales maybe many would be interested in 'Distance' but would there be enough numbers to carry it forward? Scotland has always been to the forefront of such.... but are times a changing there too?
geordie1234 Posted October 27, 2016 Report Posted October 27, 2016 (edited) I think it's the case all over many many fanciers say they are distance fanciers but come the distance races they are missing? I've been trying 3 years now to get a timer fae the gold cup and still trying it's bloody hard but I still enjoy the shorter races too.. Makes me look at the guys that can and do consistently time from these races top class Edited October 27, 2016 by geordie1234
Roland Posted October 27, 2016 Report Posted October 27, 2016 Moved back and joined new clubs to fly. I sent to Pau, with a national club of course - with broken birds. Was I disappointed when finding out I was the only one who had sent. Further to that, that they (the club) had, either before or after, decided it wasn't classed as a club race.

Makes me look at the guys that can and do consistently time from these races top classI don,t class myself just distance minded But because I flew the shorter races with good success with my brother before moving here i chose to have a go at distance.I have always fed my birds plenty early season in belief it helps to give them plenty fuel and not take anything out them till the national races come along , I have done reasonably well in the inland nat but like you George have never timed out of the gold cup 0/4 races , I did time on the night from clermont 2015 but could,nt get him right this season after his hen died but still think I have a way to go too get to the best men at the distance .I sometimes get a clock set but not always time in but anyone at club that handles my birds will know they are not a threat to the top men my opinion is it takes a lot of time and extra special fancier to be very good at both and because I don,t have time my choice is distance. Jmo.

blue pied Posted October 27, 2016 Report Posted October 27, 2016 i think theres such a gulf between 430 miles and 530 miles. its far much harder that 100 miles. so 1000 is one huge huge ask. but if i had one that thought that could do it id like to give it a try. I wouldnt just be sending it to say i sent to that 1000 mile race. id be sending expecting it to home in good time!
