REDCHEQHEN Posted October 7, 2016 Report Posted October 7, 2016 Our club is losing another member as his wife has been diagnosed with pigeon lung. This is the 2nd one, neither of the wives ever visited the lofts never mind cleaned out. Both were on allotments away from their homes and both have been put down to the bloom on clothing as the wives did the washing. Unfortunate? Unlikely? What's your thoughts?

REDCHEQHEN Posted October 7, 2016 Author Report Posted October 7, 2016 Get ridWife or birds? Both members chose their wives and no longer have the birds. The latest one less than five days between diagnosis and disposing of birds. Though the majority were given to a relative
Dooheed 5 Posted October 7, 2016 Report Posted October 7, 2016 Find that Diagnosis a strange one to be honest with the wife's never been to lofts ?? I myself suffer from and was diagnosed with this when first got back into the Doos !! I do protect myself when in loft 99% of the time (mask/hat) but there is the odd occasion Mostly on race day I nip in unprotected and have suffered no ill effect !!

Kyleakin Lofts Posted October 7, 2016 Report Posted October 7, 2016 I have read that you should wear loft clothes and once out the loft change into others to prevent the transit of the bloom and causing this secondary infection. What a luxury, however, if you had that luxury, then the loft clothes could be put into a laundromat instead of being taken home.
Guest IB Posted October 8, 2016 Report Posted October 8, 2016 A couple of years ago Dr Lynch who is part of the medical research group told me that there had been a case of a person who did not keep pigeons contracting PFL, which is an allergic reaction to pigeon proteins. Previously it had been considered that a person needed to be in constant contact with pigeons to contract it. This person had had an affair with a pigeon fancier, so it is safe to assume a pigeon fancier's clothing can be contaminated. I know of one fancier who had it and is now immune wears a loft coat while in the loft that stays in the loft. But reading the thread reminds me that your hair, trousers and shoes must also carry contaminants back into your home.
Johnbeattoch Posted October 8, 2016 Report Posted October 8, 2016 I am sure Ad Sherlaukens (spelling) said his wife got it from washing his clothes
Fair Play Posted October 10, 2016 Report Posted October 10, 2016 Had to get rid of all my birds due to the fact my upstairs neighbour caught Pfl by walking past my lofts to get to her garden.

geordie1234 Posted October 11, 2016 Report Posted October 11, 2016 Need to be careful and not mention this to the mrs she will have her and both weans claiming pigeon lung lol
