After reading article in this weeks BHW I was wondering how many active pigeon racing folk will participate in the 2016 season. Then I wonder what change in number there has been in these numbers say over the last 10 years. We can speculate about the decline but what are the facts based on reliable data. So Thoughts ........

That's another reason for my question I guess. Lots complain about the cost of racing and products and I just wonder how sustainable these businesses will be if the fancy is declining at the perceived rate.So how many individual flying members in the uk ?

Ok KMacK,

That's a period of over 50 years and not unexpected considering the change in the modern world and diversity of leisure activities available, but what about the recent past where change has been less dramatic compared to the 1960s etc. Are we looking at a constant linear decline in fanciers or a speeding up or slowly to a stubborn hard core of fanciers.

Some body must know these numbers or a way to estimate them.

Am I right in assuming that if we take the annual reports of the RPRA membership numbers and any other national governance then we can know exactly what the annual UK numbers are ?

1960, 170.000 members

2013, 43.000 members

so it said on net,

in uk

Am not sure if partnerships are counted as 2,3,4 etc. members, if so these figures are not a true reflection. How many loft numbers per year that have paid subscriptions would give a truer picture.

Auditors report SHU meeting Dec 2013 there was a decline in membership of 5% per year partnerships will make up another 20% and ghost members? There will be at least 30% less lofts than members in Scotland

If they all lose 40 birds each a year then it's over 1.6 million in a six month spell, scary

I think the number quoted will be members paying their fee, so lofts will be less. :)

This has been considered, but we are not yet at that stage. :)

why wait till you get there and no monies left if run like a business if not paying cut cloth acordingly

i will need to attend agm next year to see how many visits to schools ect to premote the sport have been done ,the sponge will dry out soon

So with SHU we have at best 2297 members. Now what about the rest of the members in Scotland ? Then members of RPRA ? Like I said I am trying to establish how many fellow racing fanciers we have out there based on known numbers. This seems critical to me to establish exactly what state our sport is in and monitoring any decline or (hopefully) increase in flying members.

The number quoted for Belgium was around 18,000, so is uk doing better or worse ?

Let's see if we can make this easier.

Which organisation numbers do we need to add together to get a total number of lofts in the UK ?

Any suggestions ?

2297 x £17.50 = £40.197.50

then you have all the profit from the reg rings , ets rings, ring transfers etc etc

I would say that a close eye is being kept on this, but at what stage do you close the office and move it all into a back bedroom? That is a judgement call that will have to be taken at some time, but we shall have to be ready for that time when it comes. Computer systems are being modernised to streamline the work undertaken and the building blocks have to be in place. Both staff members are performing a good job, but are also both nearing retirement. Just like a business, there are many considerations to take. :)

We currently have the SHU, WHU, IHU, NEHU, NWHU and the RPRA. We would require to add all their numbers together. This would give us a false number however, since I am a member of the SHU and the RPRA and I am sure many will hold dual Union membership.
