What the fk is a fret mark?? The crankometer is getting higher on this site day by day lol.Ill tell ye something Peter, this is one of yer best wans yet LOL.Have you witnessed a doo getting chased by a peregrine or getting cornered into a top corner of a loft by a stoat or a cat, the expression on their coupons is definitely STRESS.

Having to reply to your post Derek is to enlighten those who could be misinformed by your description of a Fret Mark. Now I believed a fret on a feather was when the feather had difficulty exiting from the quill sheath as I have noticed on youngsters in the nest..Never seen them on an old bird..

As regards witnessing Pigeons being chased by the Perigrene I wrote a couple of years ago my experience of that situation and the outcome, I cannot remember if I concluded the episode that when the birds returned to the loft they ate, drank and went to sleep. The next morning there were the usual firm droppings and no sign of anxiety going out for their usual excercise. Regarding stoats, weasels, cats, sparra hawks or any other vermin ?. They are not allowed in any loft I have owned without dire repercussions taking place.

Sorry but I stand with what I wrote, Stress in pigeons !! Never seen it..Nor believe it..

Never seen a fret mark on an old bird? Naw Peter surely yer gibbering. .....I must be one of these poor fanciers. ...I get ybs, some of my old birds (especially some of the channel birds) have an odd fret and I believe that my birds become stressed by bop, basketting etc!

I think this applies to most decent fanciers Dal, the blind never see these things and I do believe the maniacs have taken over the asylum lol.

I was invited by Davie Jamieson to visit for a day and handled the biggest bulk of his Old Birds and don't recall seeing a fret mark on any of his Birds either. Perhaps it is in the family ??.

We seem to think and apply words as being definable such as Fret equals Worry or Stress. The word FRET meant checkered or patterned in days gone by, But Pigeon fanciers off old, could not call it feather checkering, as it would be construed as the colour so they applied the word Fret..

Jings Stevie, they twa are copying whit I dae LOL..

With the exception of the fret marks obviously......oh and the stress lol

Stress was never mentioned Steve probably because the dont believe there is such a thing.

always was led to believe fret marks occurred with lack of food in young birds and illness in the moult with old birds :animatedpigeons:

Here's somebody from an earlier era(like yersel) stress ye wanted?

http://www.pigeonbasics.com/articles/article79.html

As I wrote in an earlier post Steve "Stress" was introduced into the workplace in 1998 and Old Hand wrote this in 2004 working on a theory that could not be proved in pigeons then, nor now, as much as I would like to give the excuse for a poor result. Poor ventilation and overcrowding results in your loft smelling of its inmates and I dont have that problem.

Fret marks can come from Illness or lack of food ...but the only fret marks i accept as acceptable are the war wounds from hard racing or a lost bird returned.

Well its high time i and everyone else got some of these birds that dont get stressed out so we could do some more winning.

For me pigeons do get stressed especially after a long hard race. Most of that is from the exertion they put in to get home. That also includes the winners who get home quicker and get food down them hrs and maybe even a day faster than some on the result! Yet they still fret.

Frets are their scars of what rhwy went through.

Also ive noticed ybs will get fret marks in the nest but single reared ones dont seem to get thum. Maybe because single reared have more supply of soft food.

You won't get the special birds mate.....unless. ... you abandon the scrapers, training, medication, it's a tough jib but the winners? Well

They fly to the western sahara. Not sure how long it takes them but something tells me its around 2 wks depending how many times they stop on the way with the weather etc. The quicker they get to mainland Europe the better, its a wee bit warmer in France and then they move on to Gibralta before leaving Europe heading over to Africa.

They should catch a few flies on the way especially after leaving Britain.

The thing that realy annoys me tho is after flying all that way there are guys waiting to catch them in nets. Seemingly they are a much soughy after delicasy.

Its an absolute sin, doing that to thum after flying so far. A dam shame!!!

Yet again another case of man destroying everything they touch!!! :emoticon-0127-lipssealed::emoticon-0127-lipssealed::emoticon-0127-lipssealed::emoticon-0127-lipssealed::emoticon-0127-lipssealed:

Lol, thats exactly my point dal. Iv'e never had a good doo that hasnt at some point been stressed out.

They always have fretmarks when you check them to see how they have completed the moult.

You know what i mean dal, say ur first bird home from say Reims this year and even tho it was in with the early birds im sure it would have a fret mark on the flight it was growing at the time of the race.

It would probably be on its 1st or 2nd flight and you would maybe look a wk or 2 wks after the race and guaranteed there would be a fret mark on that flight. ;)

Seems i managed to get 2 post on the on subject oops sorry guys cant find the edit key at the min. Dunno how i managed it but my 2nd from last post is for another topic lol. Ive only had a few beers too lol!

Yep. Most flights flung in June do a wee look at book and a wee look at flight tells you where and when maximum effort was put in....that's the way it was taught to me others might know better or different but I am gan wae that.....Frets only count against in the show pen

I agree dal, only show judges take notice of fretmarks. Personaly i dont condem a bird with a fretmark when its entered in a 500ml class. I wonder how many 500/600/700ml National winners are sittin in their lofts right now without a fretmark. What say you m8 ???

I don't want to prejudice any judging appointment lol.

Seriously tho a fret is a badge for me. ...on the 1st to 5th fair enough,it's just a hard day or similar. On the last few maybe something checked the moult, like an illness or a stress, it happens. ...Never like them on the tail as babies....but have had them that have moulTed ok and went on to better things

I know of a gold award winner that came here from Ireland covered in fret marks as a YB and as I said its went on to win a gold award with the snfc and produced many winners.
