Walter, Its funny you saying that because I have had numerous day pigeons from 520 miles and quite a few Open positions from 600+ miles not on the day but it took many years trying to get them on the result from 560 miles Gold Cup.

as john feenie use to say its the graveyard of champions peter ive lost some great pigeons at the gold cup but id say if anything this post proves is that many roads lead to rome and all types of feed and training methods which brings me back to you must have the right birds or your wasting your time you can be lucky and get a daff one and be king for a day but to be consistent you need a good family of birds and that takes time but again jmo

I think I have been trying to say that from the start Walter although perhaps not as eloquently as I would wish or others may have done. I do believe Mr Greive "Eastcoaster" will have hopefully gleaned enough info to pick up 2nds in the Section as I hope to take 1sts. That being my hopes and aspirations. :emoticon-0140-rofl: :emoticon-0140-rofl:

Sorry but not happy at 2nds only the no 1 spot for me ,

Well done all for keeping it all interesting and friendly.

My last point

I would take more pride in winning any nat while flying in the west than than in the east but believe me after flying in the east with the brother for many years it is not Easy maybe easier,

I have had many pigeons on the day from 500 miles in the 1990's and had them from 660 miles also at 500 miles had many yearlings and some also from 660 miles. I have tried all types of feeds and feeding methods with success. I timed x4 out of 4 sent from Saintes in the MNFC all on the day, the first 3 being yearlings taking I think 24th open in a strong NW wind.

I believe it is not just about feeding but how they are exercised aswell. Do they get trained flagged or just left to it, how are they motivated?

I have had troughs in always full, given them peanuts, widowhood mixes of all types also at various times. So in answer to your question I cannot answer it because I have forgotten what I did in the 1990's and am still trying to find my way.

great topic,

Geo plenty of birds that win from 400 - 500 miles don't go on too win at the gold cup!!! the national Feds and combines has had plenty of top Eastbourne,Lille Ypres and even sartilly/falaise birds over the years which don't make the step up to the gold cup or the long yin.just a wee observation over 40 years of trying!!! Feeding well that's a different thing and the guy who feeds them best for the distance comes fae ELPHINSTONE.will be looking for your name on next years gold cup mate and hopefully mine aswell. :partick-thistle-Crest: :partick-thistle-Crest: :partick-thistle-Crest:

So in your opinion what makes the gold cup harder? The only difference I can see from a 500 mile national race and the gold cup to me is 40miles? Is it the route?

Geo, that 40 or 60 mile makes a difference m8.I would send any yearling to Ypres 456 mls or even Sartilly 510 mls but wouldn't send them to 550mls ( Gold cup ). Im not sure how it works but I can only go by experience into the west section. Its a different beast again when you go over 600 miles, your asking a pigeon to fly 2 inland nationals back to back.

Suppose this is one of the reasons why it's the most prestigous race in the calender

But then you look at Dorin Melinte the races he says yearlings to is unreal
