Is the Iodine at the chemists the same stuff you buy that is titled for pigeons or is it different. It is cheaper but I dont want to give it to the birds if it is not safe The ones at the the chemist say contain Ethanol, dont know if pigeon ones do but the ones I read didnt mention Ethanol

Forgot to say I have a little tiny bottle of Iodine that im sure I bought from Chemist a while back. Its good for cuts and abrasions, its quite strong use with a cotton bud. Its not the type I would put in the drinker though. ;)

the iodine in the chemist is probably an alcohol tincture of iodine. which really isn't for internal use ....the lugols solution is in a water base for internal use and also has potassium iodide to help with absorption

Old George [ Bob ] Robbie from Dundee was a great believer in Iodine in the drinking water once a week. The

amount he used was 3 drops per drinker. His birds were always in exceptional order and he was hard to beat on a Saturday. At the shows he would win more than his share. Any cuts / injuries sustained by the bird - out came the Iodine and he would lash it on. Forty years on and I still haven't seen youngsters reared to the standard that old Bob managed. Iodine was probably just a component of his all round good management.
