peter pandy Posted February 7, 2014 Report Posted February 7, 2014 Used to have a Zippo lighter and kept it in my chest pocket and it leaked. My chest ended up raw and required medical treatment which is why I know it burns the skin. All lighter fluid is more flammable than petrol as it is distilled finer.

Guest IB Posted February 8, 2014 Report Posted February 8, 2014 Need to be sure which one you're dealing with: Quill Mite that lives within the quill below skin level and feeds by sucking fluids from the birds soft tissue by piercing through the quill wall well below skin level; or Depluming Mite, that cause feather shafts to break off leaving a stubbly bare patch on the chest. The first type was first described by vet Frank Harper in his video and he used Front Line to clear it. He doesn't say which one, which strength or how to treat. Wim Peters refers to it on p197 of fit to win 2. Very difficult to treat as it wasn't known when in the feather growing cycle the mite enters the quill. By coincidence noticed a new advert in BHW 7th Feb p99 for a cure for Depluming Mite: Meditech Feather Rot Kit, Ivermectin + Copper Sulphate. I'd bother with this for the first time last year, 2 birds. I sprayed the area with Virkon S, and while still wet used puffer-powder version of Johnson's Mite spray (permethrin) over the area. Done that a few times and seems to have worked.
