2014 life rings issued too early some tail end of december. youngsters would be natural darkness, also trained with old birds by time yb racing starts would be like yearlings i think rings shouldnt bee issued till 7th jan 2014 then you would be rining 2014 y/bs as there ring states

Some peeps would like to get as many youngsters out of their stock to put on the darkness. The earlier you pair the more rounds you'll get for this. IMO it's a waste of time, money & energy, 9 times out of 10 the later youngsters beat these early bred youngsters.

January will do fine for pairing up, shu ring won't be in Ayrshire until end of December so there is no rush plus it's to bloody cold to try and rear young birds up here

January for me,one of the problems IMO breeding early young is not being able to get them out if the weather goes tits up for a few week,I don't have an aviary so they will be locked up for that time.

Like mine out from the day they are put through to their own section.

rings should not be issued untill at least 30th march and by the time young birds are weaned and seperated the sparra hen will be down on eggs and so will percy ;)

I canny wait to pair up if my new loft was to be built earlier then I'd follow wattie with my stockies

you could doo a lot worse than follow that man geo

I've tried pairing early, but what I've found the early breds cannot beat the May early June hatched youngsters when the combines come round.

Derek Hay said something similar the other week about breeding later gets better results.. maybe something to look into plus easier on the pocket

Depends on how many pigeons you have. Myself I only have 6pr of stock birds so need to pair that little bit earlier. If I had plenty of birds, March would be my preferred time for breeding.

every one to there own but im not out to win youngbird races if they win its a bonus im giving my yb all the time i can rangeing and training before yb racing starts and ive found its the later youngsters that get youngbird sickness worse than there earlier bred loft m8s

I will breed some early for the people who have asked me for them but I will take my own from the later ones. I have never found that it is an advantage to breed early and I find it a disadvantage to have youngsters in need of work before I am ready for it. A lot of the people around here like to have their youngsters flying for hours on end but I think it does more harm than good. When my youngsters start to range at 10/12 weeks I get them up the road and I don't want it to clash with my old bird training and racing. As far as results are concerned I usually win more races than the people with older youngsters so I see no point in it at all.

Walter , if your pairing up that early when if at all do you start treating for worms/cocci/paratyphus ? Surely they will still be in the moult at that time ,
