Hi everyone!

New to the forum and found it really interesting and helpful.

I used to keep and race pigeons when I was younger. I'm 30 now and not had pigeons for near on 15 years. I hated my mum for making me get rid when we moved :(

Anyways I'm starting up again now. Ironically, in my mums back yard. Weird I know.

I'm looking for advice on my loft please:

This is the shed "loft" I'm looking at (10x8ft). I will (I say i will do but of course i mean my dad) do the alterations to make the necessary windows / traps / bobs.

Do you guys reckon its any good or would you recommend a different type? I'm no good with my hands so couldn't make one from scratch. My plan is to have a 2ft x 8ft corridor at the front with 3 sections inside.

Any ideas or advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Thank you for looking and hope to make some new friends on here :)

welcome to Basics .all sounds like a good plan .where are you ? .I would visit a few local lofts ,see who,s winning ,whats there set up like etc ? :emoticon-0138-thinking:

Thanks for your reply.

I'm in Leeds. I have a friend who has invited me round to his loft to have a look and he has kindly offered to help me where he can.

My main question was do you guys think this loft would be suitable or should I look at something else?

Sorry for sounding dumb but I really want to get it right.

Hi Mark, welcome to the site, the shed looks ideal for conversion to a loft, ventilation is a major point, needs a good airflow from bottom to top , vents at the bottom need to be vermin proof and don't over crowd, 4 or 5 pairs will breed you all the youngsters you want for racing, enjoy. Bill

good point Bill , and being in Leeds ,theres plenty of good fliers about . it maybe worth looking at buying a second hand loft ,may cost the same as a new shed ?? .I have when I started raced to 3 second hand garden sheds ,with good ventilation ,but I am fairly handy with a hammer & saw. best of luck with the birds . :animatedpigeons:

2ft corridor

would give you 8ft x 8ft of space for loft

3 sections - 2 at 3ft wide and 1 at 2ft wide

that sounds way too small for sections

My smallest section is 4ft x 6ft - and that's small!!

Oh - and welcome to basics :egyptian:

Thanks for the replies guys :) Appreciate all your advice.

I think I will have to get the next size up. The new loft will be 12x8ft with a 2ft corridor. So the internal size will be 10 x 8. My idea was to have 3 sections at the following:

Section 1 (largest) - 10 x 4ft

Section 2 & 3 - 5 x 4ft

Still too small?

I am only starting with 3 pairs of birds and then breeding my first proper young birds to race with. I'm not eager to get racing I'm more interested in getting it right.

There is a couple of lofts which I am planning to visit so hope to pick up more ideas advice from them.

I understand the points regarding vermin and ventilation and will make sure I have plenty of ventilation and plenty of vermin prevention.

wellcome mark your shed and idea looks fine m8 but i would remove the 3rd plank from the bottom the full lenth and replace with chicken wire giving a 4 inch gap for ventaltion then put the same plank back on at an angle to keep the rain out do the the same with top plank along the back and it will be perfect for air flow in the loft two sputnics on the front and your ready to go the size of your sections make no difference its how many birds you have in each that matters m8 good luck with it

Nice advice mate!! :)

As I said earlier I'm not looking to rush into it. I would much rather get it all right before I start breeding or racing etc.
